FURTHER BROKER’S COMMENTS:

• Blue painted topsides painted - 2019

• Shoal draft 2.4m keel

• Semi-skegged rudder

• Hydraulic furling main and mizzen sail plus powered winches

• Blue painted topsides painted - 2019

• Teak decks

• Doghouse arrangement above cockpit

• Low hours run on 210hp Caterpillar engine

• Electric bowthruster

• Air conditioning

• Washing machine

• 2x Northern Lights generators

• Recently replaced batteries

• Cutter rigged with furling genoa and staysail

DESIGN REVIEW:

Dieter Empacher designed this handsome ketch for construction at Kanter Yachts of St. Thomas, Ontario, a builder who specialises in aluminium. The Kanter 66 is the ideal size for long-range cruising. She combines great Looks, the increasingly popular hard-sheltered center cockpit and an interior with enough breathing space to permit two or three couples to live private lives yet make common use of truly adequate social span. Her looks come from a low profile and a cockpit that falls naturally into place between the two masts.

The hull shape illustrates Empacher's intimate understanding of the unique requirements of a ketch. He set the keel well aft, and gave her a distinct bustle that fain into a partial skeg terminating in a huge balanced rudder to guarantee a light touch on the helm.

If yacht design is the art of juggling conflicting proportions, here is an example that has everything in perfect balance. The beam, at 26 percent of the length, might look overly narrow if she were a sloop, but given the inherent stability associated with a low rig, why not fine out the lines to reduce resistance? The draft, at less than 8' fully loaded, is shoal enough to get you in just about anywhere. This again would have to go into the compromise column on a sloop, but with a bit less stability required by spreading sail horizontally rather than vertically, why not put the Bahamas back in the itinerary? At a displacement/length ratio of 242, the weight is moderate - not light enough to permit breakaway planing, but a good SO D/L points lighter than you would have seen a decade ago. She'll spend much of her time near her hull speed of 9 ¼ knots.

… This is a pretty big boat for the usual customer profile of a retired well-to do couple headed off on a circumnavigation with one of the grownup kids. But it's not too big a boat, if a mid-60s mate can handle the mainsail in a squall while the skipper is struggling into his seaboots. Hence the stowaway mainsail, which despite its 739 sq. ft. of saikloth can be put to bed at the press of a button. Still, yacht designers hate to give up the area in a fat roach, the full-length battens that prevent flogging and thereby add to sail longevity, and the additional efficiency of a more elliptical planform…

This design is above all a practical amalgamation of proven elements by an architect who has obviously spent time at sea. The engineroom is just that - a stand-up room large enough to accommodate the engine, senses, watermaker, exhaust systems, electrical black boxes, filters and manifolds, with enough space left over for the engineer to get at everything. All tanks are integral, which is one of the primary advantages of metal construction, and there are davits astern for the stowage of a real, hard dinghy.

MANUFACTURER’S COMMENTS:

The stunning Kanter 66 was created to offer both impressive performance and ease of operation as well as truly exceptional luxury and style, satisfying the sailing requirements of even the most discriminating owners. To ensure peace of mind, the Kanter 66 also demonstrates Kanter’s true dedication to comfort and safety.

The Kanter 66 also offers a shallow draft keel/centreboard configuration which provides optimum comfort during high-performance cruising as well as access to shallow anchorages. The vessel’s rudder features an elliptical edge to give her truly impressive steering control in all conditions.

Designed by leading international naval architect Dieter Empacher, the design of the Kanter 65 presents a classic profile that gives way to a more modern sheer with stylish transom design. The flush deck and low cabin profile are reminiscent of a racing yacht with a clean foredeck for easy sail-handling or comfortable lounging. Sail-handling technology has advanced to such a level that sailing the Kanter 65 with a limited crew remains a viable option.

Below the waterline, the design promises responsive handling and strong performance. The shallow draft keel and high ballast-to-displacement ratio allows for a comfortable motion at sea, while the length of the root chord gives excellent tracking stability. The centreboard shape is optimized to provide maximum lift-to-drag ratio. The Kanter 66 is tailor-made for both the cruising yachtsman who loves the exhilaration of speed and the IMS racing enthusiast who also loves the joy of cruising.

The Kanter 66’s watertight engine room houses all essential equipment – including the engine, generator, air conditioner and fresh-water system – and is totally insulated for superior in-cabin sound dampening and above-deck comfort. The Kanter 66’s practical, intelligent design ensures the layout and selection of mechanical and electrical systems makes routine upkeep simple and convenient.

In keeping with its status as a world-class yacht, the interior of the Kanter 66 was designed to be stylish, functional, comfortable and totally customizable, giving you the freedom to create the yacht of your dreams. In fact, All Kanter yachts are custom-built to reflect each owner’s personal style. The cabin sole is teak and holly and interior choices range from traditional cabinetry boasting cherry, ash or optional teak finishes to more contemporary options for a more urbane feel.

The Kanter 66’s spacious interior layout is bathed in natural light from plentiful windows, contributing to an invigorating sense of openness. The attention to detail continues with en suite heads that are adorned with ceramic accessories and showers that are detailed with ceramic tile. The galley is logically designed for convenience and so that the cook is always well braced, while an unusually large and comfortable dining and lounging area dominates the main salon. A full range of accessories are available, again to ensure the overall look, feel and function of your vessel meets your uncompromising expectations.

The owner’s stateroom is pure elegance – awaiting the personal embellishments of its inhabitants. The potential for lavish onboard entertaining is unparalleled thanks to the extravagantly spacious living and dining area and the presence of two additional guest cabins. Totally separate forward crew quarters allow for complete privacy.

Described as a mini mega-yacht, the Kanter 66 blends equal parts performance, convenience, luxury, style and safety to create a yacht that is world-class in every way.
