Construction

RCD Status: The yacht conforms with the essential safety requirements of Directive 94/25EC or RCDII (2013/53/EU as appropriate (Recreational Craft Directive) and is categorised A – “Ocean”

Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:

  • The hull laminate is a modern composite structure incorporating a balsa core for increased panel stiffness and weight saving to optimize the yachts centre of gravity.
  • Laminates utilize modern combination matts to increase skin strength.
  • The laminate is further strengthened with Kevlar below the waterline forward of the keel to increase impact resistance.
  • Hull molding was hand laid in glass reinforced plastic and manufactured in accordance with ISO 9002 under temperature and humidity controlled conditions.
  • Hull stiffening is achieved by a complex of glassed in floors through the keel bay areas and one molded in tray mold, plus structural bulkheads spaced throughout the yacht.
  • Keel floors are molded down into the keel sump.
  • Ring floors carry chainplated loadings through the hull and keel floors.
  • Floor structures are a combination of fan cored floor girders varying in width from 50mm to 100mm through the keel floor area over-laminated, including unidirectional glass stapes to maximize the modulus of rigidity.
  • Floors through the mast heel area are hardwood cored, with over-bonding to carry mast compression loadings.
  • Chainplate frames run continuously through the hull floor to bring the chainplate landings together.
  • The main bulkheads are inserted on traymold/matrix structural supports and are structurally bonded to the matrix supports, and the matrix to the hull.
  • Bulkheads are structurally bonded to hull topsides and the underside of the deck and coachroof, with 100mm glass bonding both sides and also through bolted at 25mm spacings.
  • Stiffening in forward and after ends incorporates areas of tray mold flanging in addition bonded in hull cross-floors and framing.
  • Forward, below the waterline, an integrally molded GRP tunnel is provided to house the bow thruster.
  • Flat areas of the deck and coachroof are balsa cored for strength and insulation, using 20mm end grain balsa 140kg per cubic metre density, vertical faces are cored with 12mm balsa of the same density.
  • Load bearing areas with the deck where fittings and fastenings are fixed balsa core is replaced with 20mm or 12mm marine plywood to the depth of the surrounding core.
  • Inner and outer skins of the deck sandwich are laid up with chopped strand matt.
  • In way of reinforcing plywood pads the inner skin is increased in laminate thickness.
  • Flexiteek laid in the cockpit.

Keel & Rudder:

  • This assembly comprises a semi-balanced rudder blade in GRP with stainless steel stock hung from a half depth skeg.
  • The rudder blade is secured to the stock by stainless steel supports.
  • These run internally throughout the blade and are welded directly to the rudder stock.
  • The rudder stock is supported and sleeved through the hull and rudder tube to the steering quadrant by rolling bearings and lip seals.
  • The skeg hull fitting is cast in bronze to provide optimum support to the rudder blade.
  • The skeg is integrally molded into the hull and is strengthened and supported using steel T-bars and a laminated plywood over-bonded frame, plus a modified top bracket.

Propulsion & Steering:

  • Brunton Autoprop 3-blade.
  • Rope cutter.
  • 10hp Sliepner side-power bowthruster.
  • The stainless prop shaft is connected to the gearbox via a flexi coupling with a dripless shaft seal.
  • The seal is water lubricated via the raw water cooling system.
  • The Whitlock wheel steering system consists of four principal parts:
  1. Steerer – the pedestal unit.
  2. Steering wires – these connect the steerer to the quadrant. Where they connect to the steerer, the wire is replaced with a chain, which runs over a toothed sprocket on the steerer.
  3. Idlers – the idlers are the main sheaves that turn the steering wires through 90 degrees towards the aft of the yacht, when they emerge from the pedestal. Instead of idlers and other sheaves, the wires can run in contour fitting conduits back to the quadrant.
  4. Quadrant – the wires connect to the quadrant, which in turn fits to the rudder stock.
