The Landfall 43 is a Canadian sailboat designed by Robert W. Ball, the chief designer of C&C Design, and first built in 1982. The Landfall 43 was built with the charter trade in mind, to compete with Morgan and Whitby’s centre-cockpit models. The Landfall series, begun with the Landfall 43’s predecessor, the Landfall 42, was part of a trend within C&C Yachts during the late 1970s and early 1980s to develop more cruising-oriented designs under company president George Cuthbertson’s direction.

Owners Comments and Boat History

The Landfall 43 is a hybrid design with only 154 in production, said to have used molds of the Morgan 42 hull with a sail plan and interior designed by C&C to compete with the charter trade vessels being constructed for the Caribbean at that time. Her skeg-hung rudder and modified fin keel give her excellent handling characteristics on all points of sail, as well as a well-appointed design for blue water cruising. Her rigging is simple and easy to handle, all reefing is effected at the mast. Hydraulic steering affords  durability and comfort at the helm. The center cockpit design provides dual egress to her salon and aft cabin,  and provides excellent visibility with its height from sea. Her raised stem, ample freeboard and mahogany toerail give her classic lines more akin to a classic S&S/ Hinkley than the typical racer/ cruiser lines of the typical C&C.

Catherine” is a seasoned live-aboard Center cockpit sloop, well cared for by current owners for 12 years sailing between the Northeast US and Caribbean. Her owners lived aboard raising their two daughters while touring between the Northeast US and Caribbean as musicians, extensively sailing the Antilles and Windward/ Leeward islands from 2013 - 2019. In 2019 they have hauled the vessel during hurricane season while operating another sailing charter business in NYC during summer months. The skipper is moving on to larger commercial vessels, and the family not sailing nearly as much - so she is ready for her next adventure!

In 2018 hull repairs were completed under the supervision of Rich Defiede of Gold Coast Yachts dealing with minor water intrusion to the balsa core in the aft section of the hull due to a failed through hull. In addition, hull stiffening and gusseting was added in this portion of the hull as the original design transferred all backstab load directly to the hull, and some fatigue/ deflection was noted. Rudder was shipped and stripped/ barrier coated at this time as well.

Hull was painted in 2023 with hardened Petit, mast stepped and painted in 2020. Rigging is fully inspected at least yearly and oiled semi-annually. Winches maintained at least yearly.

Deck re-painted in 2024. All bright work is kept up to date.

The auxiliary is dutifully maintained by the owner. Head was removed and planed 2018 and re-installed with new top-end gasket set. Oil changes made every 150 hrs or less.
