ORSA GRASSA, ex Emmeline, ex Samarang is originally a robust and seaworthy American schooner built in pitch pine as a one-off in Newport Beach, California by the Walton Hubbard South Coast Company shipyard in 1934 to a design by Frederic C. Brewer. In 1956, designed by the Alden studio, the sail rig changed from gaff to staysail schooner, which was easier to handle.

In excellent condition, ORSA GRASSA is based in Sardinia, on La Maddalena island (Sassari).

Rigging has been totally rebuilt in 2023.

Hull, masts and deck are in perfect condition. The hull does not require anti-fouling until July 2026.

The navigation documents have been renewed as required by the authorities.

HISTORY

Frederick C. Brewer was a designer whose fame is linked to the Bird One Design class, a 30' monotype that became very popular and appreciated in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1930s, many examples of which sailed and raced successfully. Born in England in 1870, a sailor and racer from a young age by family tradition, Brewer emigrated to the United States and trained as a designer at the studios of McBryde, Sam Crocker and John Alden.

In the 1930s he became the designer of Walton Hubbard jr.'s yard at which numerous important projects were built, such as the famous 43' Stormy Petrel in 1937 and Samarang, formerly Emmeline the 55' schooner of 1934 now renamed ORSA GRASSA, yachts that continued to feature in important West Coast regattas until the early 2000s.

n 1956, based on a design by the Alden studio, the sail rig changed from gaff to staysail schooner, which was easier to handle. Modifications were made to the dog-house and the engine was replaced with a powerful and indestructible 150 HP 2-stroke Detroit Diesel, which still honours the boat with its ancient presence and characteristic exhaust sound.

In 2007 she was bought by the current owner, shipped to Italy and renamed ORSA GRASSA. Based on the island of Maddalena, she sailed in the Mediterranean until 2012 when, under the supervision of Nat Benjamin - one of the most famous American shipwrights and a partner in the famous Gannon & Benjamin shipyard - it was decided to completely replace the planking with mahogany planks purchased in Brazil of the highest quality, with lengths of over 10 m and thickness of 50 mm.

The prestigious and demanding work is carried out in Porto Torres by the Polese Brothers. In addition to all the planking, the oak structures, which had been made imperfect by time, are replaced or partly doubled. The bow and transom are rebuilt entirely from scratch.
