A Commercial Submarine/submersible is a manned or unmanned submersible vehicle for underwater operations, typically for commercial purposes. Commonly used for tasks such as pipeline or hydrocarbon exploration or undersea mining, these vessels usually feature powerful lights, cameras, sonar systems, and scanning equipment to aid their mission. They build on existing technological advances and offer operators a way to perform commercially-critical tasks in a hostile environment. Though commercial submarines mainly fall into two major categories – passenger/tourist and work-oriented submersibles – they are further divided based on their functions, such as research, surveys, intervention, or transportation. Most commercial submarines feature a modular design that makes them intuitive to customize and adapt to any mission.
