About this South Coast One Design SCOD

Estrella is a South Coast One Design (SCOD) which really needs no introduction. She is a 25ft 11in (7.9m) long-keeled cruiser/racer designed by the late Charles Nicholson in 1955.

From 1955 until 1970 SCODs were built by a variety of builders including: Clare Lallows here on the Isle Wight. This classic wooden sailing yacht designed and built for racing and cruising features a fractional Bermudian sloop rig and are known for their stability, stiffness, and excellent righting capability .

106 SCOD were built for the dual objective of the Class Racing whilst providing a comfortable yacht to cruise, Estrella is no exception, seaworthy and fast with good cruising accommodation, plus able to race in handicap events.

The founding members of the SCOD Association resolved that the class’s objective would be to produce, seaworthy, fast one-design boats with good cruising accommodations.

The association originally had strict Class Rules as no boat was allowed to race in the class without full cruising equipment on board, ensuring a level playing field regardless of an owner’s financial position.

The SCODs continue to be a beloved choice for sailors who appreciate a classic wooden cruising yacht with a racing pedigree
