Construction

RCD Status: Our understanding is that the yacht is exempt from the essential safety requirements of the Recreational Craft Directive as she was built and placed into use within the EU prior to 1998. 

Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:

• Contest 40S built in 1994, first launched in 1995, by Contest Yachts in Holland to a Dick Zaal design.
• White GRP hull and superstructure.
• Teak laid decks and cockpit.
• Round bilged hull.
• Skin fittings and seacocks have been replaced where necessary in 2023.
• New anodes (2023).

Keel & Rudder:

• Wing keel.
• Skeg hung rudder.

Machinery

Engine & Gearboxes:

• 1 x Yanmar 4JH2-HTE 65hp diesel engine.
• Engine fully refurbished in 2022/2023.
• Heat exchanger overhaul in 2020.
• New mounts fitted 2023.
• Engine is believed to be larger than standard installation with thrust bearing and flex couplings for vibration-free and silent running.
• Indirect cooling, mechanical gearbox with dampers fitted to control cable to prevent pedestal amplification of noise.

Maintenance & Performance:

• Engine hours – approx. 2730.5 as of October 2023.
• Engine last serviced – 2023 (soon to be winterised).
• Cruising speed – approx. 7 knots @ 20k rpm.
• Maximum speed – approx. 9 knots @ 30k rpm.
• Fuel consumption at cruising speed – approx. 1.6 litres per hour (guesstimate).
• Range @ cruising speed – approx. 250 – 300 Nm (guesstimate).

Propulsion & Steering:

• Whitlock Cobra wheel steering and emergency tiller.
• Stainless steel propeller shaft.
• Variprop 3-bladed feathering propeller, plus spare.
• Sidepower 6hp bowthruster.
• Spurs ropecutter on shaft.

Electrical Systems

• Electrics checked and updated in 2022/2023.

Voltage Systems:

• 4 x 105Ah batteries replaced in 2022 (1 x engine, 3 x service).
• New battery level indicator.

Battery Chargers:

• Victron Pallas 50Ah automatic battery charger.

Alternators:

• Twin alternators, with Adverc controller; new main alternator (2014).

Shore Power:

• Shore power cable.

Other Electrical:

• Solar panels on cockpit coaming (30w max); 30w solar panel on hatch garage.

Plumbing Systems

Fresh Water & Water Heating System:

• Pressurised hot and cold water system with hot water from Webasto heater or shorepower.

Bilge Pumps:

• Electric and manual bilge pumps.

Tankage

Fuel:

• Total capacity of 350 litres in stainless steel tank.
• New diesel pipe fitted to Lloyds Standard (2023).

Fresh Water:

• Total capacity of 500 litres in two stainless steel tanks.

Grey/Blackwater Holding Tanks:

• Total capacity of 70 litres (aft Heads).
• Macerator with pump out facility (2023).

• Independent Raymarine GPS/Chart plotter with Navionics English Channel & West Coast of France charts, charts updated in 2023.

Accommodation

Summary of Accommodation:

• Classic teak interior joinery in saloon.
• 2 x Double cabins.
• Blue upholstery in saloon and cabins. Chart table seat in leather.
• All deck hatches have roller & mosquito blinds and hatch in forward companionway gives light and ventilation to forward heads.

Description of layout from forwards:

• Saloon has U-shaped with bench settees and folding dining table between.
• Aft owner’s cabin has a centreline, slatted double berth with en-suite PAR heads toilet replaced in 2019 and separate shower compartment.
• Forward cabin has double V berth with infill and en-suite heads (with removable hanging rail) and shower; extra doors give privacy to cabin and heads.
• Large navigation area with shelves and storage.

Deck Equipment

Rig:

• Sloop rig; belived re-rigged (2010/11).
• Selden aluminium mast with double spreaders.
• Furlex headsail furling.
• Removable inner forestay.
• Rodkick boomvang.
• Mechanical backstay adjuster.
• Spinnaker boom.
• All halyards, sheets and reefing lines lead aft into cockpit for ease of handling.
• Lewmar ball bearing blocks to mainsheet and ball bearing sleeves leading genoa furling lines outside stanchions.

• Slightly taller than standard rig, increasing performance under sail.
• Single line mainsail reefing led aft to cockpit.

Winches:

• 2 x 54AEST electric sheet winches. Serviced 2022.

• 1 x Spinnaker halyard winch on mast.

Sails:

• Sanders fully battened main with stack pack (2004).
• Voilerie Sextant genoa (2023) with UV protective strip.
