The Amateur Wharram Tane Catamaran, located in Appingedam, Netherlands, is a classic 1970 sailing vessel with an overall length of 8.38 metres and a beam of 5.00 metres. Designed by James Wharram, it reflects his early experiences with Atlantic crossings and was aimed at being a fast, yet easy-to-build catamaran. Although it didn't develop into a racing class, the TANE was favoured by builders for long sea voyages. The "Kookaburra" is a particular model that has been widened and fitted with higher cabins for enhanced comfort. While it is currently in need of some tender loving care due to lack of recent use, it is structurally sound and equipped with navigation instruments, sails, safety equipment, and essential electronics. With refurbishment, it promises new delightful journeys on the Wadden Sea and European coasts.
The TANE is one of James Wharram's earliest designs, based on his two Atlantic crossings and building experiences between 1954 and 1965. Intended as a class of fast, easy-to-build sailing catamarans for club races, the TANE proved to have great appeal to builders who wanted to make long sea voyages. Many TANE's have been built, but it has never become a racing class. To increase comfort, the TANE was replaced in 1973 by Wharram's TANENUI.
The "Kookaburra" was long lastingly built by one of the first CTC members and widened by the previous owner to 5m and upgraded with higher cabins for more comfort. Thanks to this renovation, this Tane is still in good structural condition. As she wasn't used in the past 3 years she now needs a lot of TLC. After that the "Kookaburra" can offer its new owner many more beautiful trips on the Wadden sea and along the European coasts.
