A River/Canal boat Sailing Barge is a type of shallow draft boating craft designed for transporting goods by river or canal. It is typically a flat-bottomed boat built with one or two masts, usually, with no keels, that has a robust, rugged structure and decking platform suitable for carrying goods and personnel. These barges were the workhorses of the inland waterways of the past, and were often rigged with a single gaff sail on the mainmast and a sprit sail on the foremast. The craft's shallow draught allowed them to be steered in the shallowest of waters, and they could safely pass through locks as small as a couple of feet deep. River/Canal Boat Sailing Barges were also used as fishing boats.
