Construction, Engine & Batteries, On & Below Deck

Construction

Built in the traditional style both the hull and deck mouldings are made of hand consolidated heavy weight GRP mouldings finished external in and off white gelcoat.

Below the waterline, as you would expect from a classic cruiser type design, she has a full length moulded keel with encapsulated lead ballast. The substantial rudder runs the full depth of the keel being supported on a skeg at the aft end of the keel. The propellor is protected with an aperture. The whole underwater hull was cleaned of old Antifouling until the primer coating and new painted in 2019 with self polishing Antifouling

On deck the deck moulding is again finished in the off white gelcoat with non-slip panels of Treadmaster material neatly applied (need of renewing). Around the deck edge the moulded toe rail is fitted with a solid varnished teak capping rail, brass chafe protection strips have been fitted to protect the boat in way of mooring cleats. With substantial guard wires and 'granny bars' at the mast the boat has a very purposeful and safe appearance. The deep cockpit has laid teak on the seats and sole with a solid teak capping to the coaming.

Engine & Batteries

To access the engine space the companion-way steps are removed and the sole panel beneath lifts clear to allow full access to the sound insulated compartment from above. A small panel forward can be removed allowing better access to the forward end of the engine. Ships Batteries are:
Domestic Bank - 2 off 120Ah Lead Acid type. (2021); Engine Bank - 1 off Lead Acid Type. (2021)

On Deck

A stout twin roller stem head fitting allows stowage of the anchor on the bow while maintaining the ability to pick up moorings. The horizontal deck mounted electric windlass handles the anchor chain, self stowing in a below decks locker. Aft to the mast the decks are unobstructed and easily moved around with jackstays providing crew with a secure anchoring point.

With all halyards and reefing lines handled at the mast substantial 'granny bars' are fitted in way of the mast to keep crew safe while forward. Several winches for line handling are mounted on the port and starboard sides of the mast. The mainsheet traveller is mounted on the coachroof aft with the mainsheet and car control lines lead aft into the cockpit.

Access to the cockpit is via either side of the coachroof. A relatively small spray hood secured on top of the coachroof provides additional protection for the cockpit. The cockpit itself is very traditional in style with deep moulded coamings running around the full cockpit and extending almost to the full width of the deck; the coamings are capped with solid timber giving a nice classic finish. The pedestal and wheel are located centrally in the cockpit with seating provided all around the cockpit. Lockers are provided under the port and starboard side seats. A short section of aft deck extends aft from the cockpit to the transom. A substantial gantry overhead at the aft end of the boat provides mounting for the wind generator and solar panels.

Below Decks

With the the Tradewind 35's being pre-dominately sold in kit form the quality of finish and layout can vary. Knotts Maid however is one of the best examples that has seen in recent years with the interior fit out to a good standard and the layout obviously to suit short handed offshore sailing. All the interior joinery work has been constructed from oak which lightens the interior and contrasts nicely against dark upholstery while retaining a very classic feel.

The forepeak provides a generous single berth port with an infill section dropping in to create a very good sized double berth.

With the infill section not in place a small seat is provided to starboard beneath and good selection of storage lockers. There is a door separating the forepeak from the rest of the boat and a passage way leadsdirectly aft to the saloon with the heads accessed to port and a sensible hanging locker to starboard. Located to port the heads compartment is finished in a white moulding with varnished timber trims and locker doors finishing the traditional look. The heads compartment is appointed with sea toilet, basin, pressurised hot and cold faucet also serving as a shower head. Storage is provided with lockers under the sink and outboard.

The saloon is stepped down into the hull from the elevated galley and nav station. Laid out in a traditional manner bench style seating is provided along port and starboard sides of the saloon with a drop leaf table centrally mounted, passage forward is made along the starboard side. Both bench settees convert to create well sized single berths with a trotter box providing additional length on the port side bunk.Canvas weather screens are installed in all bench berths. Beneath and outboard of the seating storage is provided. A semi enclosed pilot berth is provided outboard of the port settee.

Located to starboard of the companionway is the nav station complete with chart table and forward facing navigators seat.

Chart storage and bosuns drawers are provided within the chart table while additional lockers are provided aft of the seat. Ships switch panel, VHF and radar display are all easily to hand for the navigator.

Opposite the nav station is the compact galley area appointed with gas cooker, top loading fridge and twin sinks. Provided storage has been obviously designed for use at sea with sensible fiddles fitted on shelves and hanging fruit baskets.

Owner's Comment

'Knotts Maid' has served us very well and it is very reluctantly we have made the hard decision to sell her. We were looking for a serious cruising yacht and having completed an Atlantic passage with her where she more than met our needs. During our ownership we were sailing in Irish Sea, Biskaya Bay and Atlantic to the Azores. She is now based in Horta. Transfer to another harbor can be arranged.

During the previous ownerships the boat was based in Scotland and the Scandinavian countries and extensively cruised the waters around Norway before moving her to the Baltic Sea and exploring the coast of Sweden, Finland, Denmark and the Aland Isles. During all of our cruises we have sailed her in all conditions, often short or single handed and have always felt safe with the boat being very sea kindly and predictable.
