Churchill's yacht up for sale in France for €2 million

Sir Winston Churchill's luxury boat Amazon, built for the wartime prime minister in 1936, goes on sale in France for €2 million after two refits - complete with bar and Jacuzzi

A luxury yacht that was tailor-made for Sir Winston Churchill, including a well-stocked bar, is up for sale in France for a cool €2million (£1.5 million).

The 127-foot boat includes three decks that can sleep up to 12 people and was built by Thornycroft Shipyard in 1936, before Churchill became prime minister. It is currently moored in the town of Limay to the west of Paris.

Initially called Amazon when it was owned by Sir Winston, the vessel was later renamed Welsh Liberty, then My Evangeline, before being given back its original name once again.

Amazon features an on-board bar ordered by Churchill, a famous lover of drink and cigars, and can transport up to 60 people.

The boat, which boasts a top speed of 11 knots thanks to two 700-horse power engines, has a captain's room, a 40-square metre lounge, a meeting room, and a sun lounger on the vast top deck with a Jacuzzi.

Coldwell Banker France, a company that specialises in the sale of luxury castles and villas, has put it up for sale for 2 million euros (£1.5million).

“We’re talking about a unique piece that will be of interest to a collector for its historic character or a sailing fan for its vintage side,” said Laurent Demeure of Coldwell Banker France and Monaco.

The yacht has notched up 4,000 nautical miles since it was built 80 years ago, but has been returned to its pristine former glory, plus mod cons, after two refits between 1990 and 2005.

Amazon was not the only boat for the wartime leader known for his extravagant lifestyle. He also took to the seas in his later model, called Christina.

Churchill loved spending time on the water, and was notably a regular guest on shipping tycoon Aristotle Onassis’s floating palace, Christina O, where he famously first introduced the Greek magnate to President Kennedy and his then wife Jackie – who Onassis would later marry.

Churchill memorabilia can fetch far higher than the asking price.

Last September, Sotheby’s in London sold his “Victory” watch for £485,000 – four times its high estimate, which the auction house called a “world record result”.

Presented to Sir Winston by a group of Gevevan citizens after the Second World War, its unique enamel dial depicts St George slaying the dragon.
