At the end of the 1950s, classic wooden motor boats were built on Lago d'Iseo in Lombardy/Italy, which are still coveted by enthusiasts and collectors.
Two shipyards with classics in this area that particularly stand out are the shipyards RIVA and AVIONAUTICA RIO. On the one hand RIVA with the top model RIVA AQUARAMA and on the other hand AVIONAUTICA RIO with the RIO COLORADO.
Even if the two top models are very similar on the outside and you might think they come from the same designer, there are still significant differences. Due to individual production at AVIONAUTICA RIO, all hull parts are made of multi-bonded mahogany and are attached in one piece. In contrast to the mass production at RIVA, where the wooden parts come from suppliers, the hulls of a RIO are about 5-7 mm thicker and therefore automatically more durable.
In fact, the external difference between a RIO COLORADO and a RIVA AQUARAMA, in addition to the different logos, can only be seen on the square transom of the RIO COLORADO in contrast to the semicircular transom of the RIVA AQUARAMA.
The engines are also very similar in both models. Each yard uses different engine manufacturers with different performance potential. Finally, both boats have very similar, maximum configuration levels.
The RIO COLORADO and RIVA AQUARAMA came onto the market almost at the same time, although the RIO COLORADO was probably slightly ahead despite being made to order.
Due to series production and better marketing, a RIVA AQUARAMA is not only much better known today, but was also built many times more often than a RIO COLORADO. There is no real advantage between the two boats, perhaps apart from the fact that the bottom of a RIVA AQUARAMA has to be changed more often due to its lower strength.
Here is one of the rarely available RIO COLORADO GRAND TOURISM for sale that is in excellent condition, not only in terms of wood and engines. All work from the last 15 years can be traced on the basis of invoices and the history of the owners also goes back to the last millennium.
