Owner's Comments
This was our first ‘big sailing boat’, having had some experience with small motor boats and dinghy sailing. We have had the boat from new for fourteen years but now with age, knees and the demands of grandchildren, it is time to pass on our much loved boat which has been such a part of our lives and comes with great memories.
We had a list of yachts we thought might fit the bill but really no knowledge on what to base our decision. Through friends, we knew a couple whose son was a shipwright for Spirit Yachts. We asked him to look at our short list, and at the Southampon Boat Show, he looked at them all. He prodded about, looked under floor boards/cupboards/general innards and felt the Bavaria was the best constructed. We might have been taken in by shiny bits and beautifully made beds and flowers on tables. He wasn’t, and said the Bavaria would be his choice.
The boat has been kept at Brixham, Lymington, Beaulieu and Cowes, but perhaps our best memories are of he five years the boat was in France, at the small Brittany port of Binic. This meant we could explore the ports and islands of the Brittany coast.
We’ve used the boat to sail but also as a base. Almost like an apartment on the water which we could easily move. The boat is comfortable and warm, even when it isn’t sailing weather. The upgrades we have really noticed is the mattress in the master cabin which is more cofortable than our matress at home, and the upgraded saloon cushions which are really hard wearing and comfortable (and better than the originals).
Experienced sailors who have been on the boat have been very impressed by her sailing qualities. On one cross channel sail, we set off last by some margin, but arrived in Cherbourg in second place from a group of 15 yachts. This might reflect navigational skill, luck, the boats performance or all three but we felt chuffed!!! We have found it easy to sail, predictable, safe and eaily cruises at a fine pace.
