RARE TO THE MARKET:  Southern Cross 39 Fully Loaded for Cruising -  A Truly Turn Key Vessel!

Built by the famous navel architect Thomas Gillmer- the canoe stern along with sharply rising sheer lines make this vessel a real head turner. If you've been looking for a blue-water boat, with quality upgrades and a caring owner then this classic beauty is a must see!

She's just been hauled for off-season storage at Royal River Boat Yard in Yarmouth, Maine. 



The Southern Cross 39 is a no nonsense double-ender.  She has a canoe stern and sharply rising sheer line, but below water line, her fin keel and skeg hung rudder arrangement increase the performance of this passage making machine. Her cutter rig with bowsprit has 774 sq. ft. of canvas, and plenty for her displacement of 21,000lbs.

This configuration has a V-berth forward, quarter berth to the portside, and superb seagoing galley amidships. The galley is easy to access from the companionway with a U-shaped orientation for security offshore. The hulls were built in fiberglass with Airex foam coring throughout while the deck and cabin house were balsa cored. The ballast is internally set cast iron. Water tanks are set in the keel while the fuel tank is underneath the cockpit.

Spartina is a well-maintained sailboat ready to cruise coastal or off-shore.  She has explored from Mount Desert Island, Maine, to Conception Island in the SE Bahamas. She is a great live-aboard/ distance cruising boat for a couple who like to take on guests.  Spartina moves nicely in light air and can handle heavy winds under staysail and reefed main.  



Hop aboard 'Spartina' via a break in either side of her lifelines and you're enveloped into a spacious cockpit with high coamings, tan and white throw cushions and plenty of space for entertaining guests while under sail. 

Looking forward, she has a single mast with single stays fwd and aft.  The forestay has a roller furling system. The mast is supported by chain plate mounted uppers, forward tending lowers, aft tending lowers, and running backstays.  The staysail stay is attached at the bow to a fitting on deck. The staysail slot is parallel to forestay.  Sail inventory includes fully battened main, genoa, full staysail, storm staysail, and spinnaker with pole. Mainsail is outfitted with reef points. 

Her cockpit is comprised of a pedestal mounted steering helm, wind, speed and depth indicators, and bench seating behind wheel above two 20# LPG tanks. Her starboard cockpit locker is large and open to hull. The inboard bulkhead is removable for full access to the engine space.  Her portside cockpit locker is more shallow and contains the vessels easily accessible safety gear.  Forward of the cabin-top winches are jam cleats, which facilitate handling of the running rigging run aft from the mast. On the cockpit deck there is a removable teak grate.

As you descend through her companionway, 'Spartina' welcomes you with her homey vibe: an impressive teak and holly sole, a warm teak paneled space that exudes professional seamanship and comfort and her custom linens.  Behind the ladder you just used is a removable cover providing access to the engine room.  Directly to starboard is her aft-facing, dedicated, navigation station with outboard storage and her equipment panels easily in view. The chart table has a large working surface, and is hinged to provide storage below. It provides a wonderful desk for today's hybrid working world. 

Forward of the nav station, also to starboard and mid ships is the U-shaped galley with three burner stove top with oven, deep, double stainless steel sinks, refrigeration and ample storage. The deep double sinks are oriented such that the cook is facing forward when using with storage directly beneath.  The waist high fridge is impressively large and equipped with shelves and spacers to maximize space. Overhead is a custom spice rack. The gimbaled 3 burner stove with oven and broiler and safety bar are oriented along the hull with safety leash for peace of mind while underway cooking. 

Aft and to port is the enclosed aft cabin/ quarter berth. She's comprised of a 7' long and wide berth- wide enough on the fwd end to be a snug double or roomy single and a full hanging locker with drawer storage below. 

Forward of the aft cabin is a head with sink, shower, toilet, large oval mirror, overhead hatch, 2 opening ports, wet gear hanging locker, and linen and toiletry storage and separate shower stall. 'Spartina' is equipped with a vacu-flush head. This head is dual access: She works conveniently as a "day head", for her forward V-berth guests and can be directly accessed from the aft cabin through a bi-fold door. 

Forward is the vessel's saloon. Entering the main saloon; there is an L-shaped settee with table to starboard and a straight settee to port, each with bookshelves and rolling covered storage outboard/ behind. The centerline is a table with provides additional storage space and expands to seat at least eight guests. The U-shaped settee to port pulls out to create a large berth. The headroom is 6'4" and there is plenty of ventilation and light, with 8 opening ports, two overhead hatches and two dorade vents. The cabin sole is holly and teak, with water tankage below deck.

Moving forward from the salon is the Main Cabin/ V-berth, with 6'1" headroom and a large and comfortable 7' Vberth.  To starboard is a cedar-lined, full-standing hanging locker.  Mounted to overhead, running to foot of Vberth are 3 clothes storage compartments per side.  All volume under berth is available for storage.  There are two prism overhead lights, a large forward hatch, and two lamps that provide reading light at night. 

'Spartina's' interior is spacious, bright, open and beautifully appointed, and with tankage below decks, storage space is extraordinarily abundant.
