The aim of Oliver Design, designers, and builders of the Oliver Classic 20, is to recover the old times romantic yachts with this prototype. The yacht was built in the 2004 in a small shipyard specialised in wooden construction in Santander, Spain. The hull & superstructure is made of wood, mixing old traditional construction, and designing with the latest updated techniques.

The yacht has an extremely attractive shape with a well distributed interior layout allowing an easy circulation. It can accommodate 8 passengers comfortable with a forward double cabin, two double bunk side cabins & a large owner aft cabin with direct access to the marina, the Salon & Kitchen is the centre part and it has a very cosy bridge on top with very good visibility for sailing and manoeuvring. The feeling of cruising and living on board this yacht with all Burmese teak superstructure and interiors is very relaxing and enjoyable.

The yacht is very well equipped to achieved total comfort on board including air- conditioning, water maker, TV satellite, audio video system, dishwasher, washing machine, oven, hob plates, icemaker, outside barbecue, TV´s in all cabins, two fridges & freezer. For an optimal performance, modern equipment has been fitted including hydraulic steering, bow and aft capstans, electronic controls, and full integrated Navigation equipment. The result is a displacement yacht with a cruising speed of 9 knots and 630 HP supply by two MAN diesel engines. This yacht has been designed with the idea of enjoying comfortable holidays, sailing peacefully, easily, and relaxing. The boat is mainly used in short travels, but the fuel range allows it also to make long distances. The engine room of the Oliver Classic 20 has quite a big space in order to allow an easy maintenance with the possibility to access to all the maintenance points comfortably and safety.


‘’The Oliver Classic 20 has been constructed entirely of wood, using traditional methods, with oak ribs, iroko lining with superstructure and interiors in Burma’s teak. This prototype transports us to another era but incorporates all the present-day conveniences associated with recreational navigation, such as the hydraulic mechanism which opens the stern to be used as a bathing platform. The high freeboard, the streamlined bow and the displacement hull guarantee safe, relaxing navigation. The cockpit avails itself of a spacious dining area. A folding leaf enables the two tables to be joined, which has an integrated fridge and refuse container on the inside. On the bridge deck we can relax in the sun, on this terrace with the help of two furniture units housing a fridge, sink and grill. Several air beds have been placed on both levels of the bow superstructure to be used as a solarium. Great visibility is to be had from the bridge, with its sliding roof, thanks to the large wrap round windows and the considerable height at which it is positioned.

This boat’s classic design and entirely wooden construction takes us back to another era. Nevertheless, the Oliver Classic 20 is fully equipped like any other present-day yacht. This is a safe vessel, with a spacious and well-planned layout, designed to be lived in. The Oliver Classic 20 is a family boat, built for and by the same family. But a Spanish family accredited with various titles in nautical architecture and some more in decoration an interior décor, in addition to their experience in having designed and constructed the REVILO range in their Santurce (Vizcaya) shipyard, with a total of 27 units sold with an innovative design for their time, and that, even nowadays, most of them are still on service. But the hard crisis that took place at the end of seventies forced the Oliver family to close the shipyard. Even so, Oliver Design is today a technical design office with more than thirty years’ experience and several international awards in the bag, above all in the field of design relating to high speed ferries.

Three years ago, Jaime Oliver skimmed through an article in a nautical magazine regarding a classic wooden boat refit, originally constructed in 1929, with the result that he once again embraced his dream to return to designing and constructing wooden boats, but this time it was to work on his own boat. The designs, all drawn by hand, were promising, so the necessary backing was sought to make it a reality. The shipyard, Astilleros Oliver, was established as a result of the excellent outcome and originality of this project. It was located in Santander, in Cantabria, in the north of Spain, where they are preparing to start the construction of another custom built boat for one of the many people interested at this time, but preferably a vessel of the same style and preferably in wood.

One of the great aspects of the Oliver Classic 20 is that it is built entirely of wood, using wholly traditional construction methods, at a time when shipyards preserving this type of construction are rapidly disappearing due to the difficulty in finding labour and the lengthy construction times. Astilleros Oliver, whilst aware of these difficulties, is prepared to bring back the art of wood craftsmanship. It is, for this company, a true vocation. It has taken two and a half years to construct this 20-metre vessel, which has been labelled a “prototype”. The vessel has laminated oak ribs, iroko lining (a type of African teak) and the superstructure and the interiors are of Burma teak. This classic inspired vessel is born of wood, with a displacement hull and voluminous interiors, very much in the northern style, designed to be lived in.

Outstretched spaces of the boats romantic exterior lines, which remind us of some of the boats from the first half of the last century, particularly noticeable are the two decorative masts, the one to bows complete with a crow’s nest, and the high superstructure, compensated by the also considerable height of the freeboard. The different colours in which the Oliver Classic 20 is horizontally festooned, undersides in red and freeboard in navy blue with the superstructure in white and varnished wood, reduce the optical effect of the significant height, also contributed to by the outstretched decks.

Decks which have knowledgably been put to good use for the owner and his guests to relax and enjoy at leisure. In the cockpit, protected by a rigid superstructure, on top of which the pneumatic tender is stowed, which is launched and hauled with the help of a mini-crane, there is ample dining space, with a double table and a central walkway, although a folding leaf enables the two tables to be joined to accommodate ten diners. The central walkway is conceived not only for the guests to be able to seat themselves at the table, but also to access the bathing platform, created by activating a hydraulic mechanism which opens the stern. From the very same, of considerable proportions, there is also a convenient folding bathing ladder. The platform, likewise, can be used to embark and disembark, although for this there also remains the appropriate large doors, set either side, and in the pulpit the railing can be opened to disembark when moored bows to.

From the cockpit, a stairway leads to a sun terrace with moveable sun-loungers and a coffee table, as well as two furniture units, one housing the fridge and the other a sink and grill. In addition to these relaxation zones are spacious solariums created on the bows, on two levels, by means of the essential air beds placed on top of the superstructure. These are accessed from the cockpit by the lateral gangways, but also from the interior saloon by means of the doors located either side. Another of this boat’s strong points is the ease of on-board circulation.

To go from the cockpit to the saloon, set at midships, we can opt for one of three routes. Firstly, the aforementioned lateral gangways, gaining access by the doors either side. Secondly, by going up to the terrace and entering by the bridge and down the steps into the saloon, and thirdly, and the most surprising, from the cockpit there is direct access to the owner’s cabin, located beneath the terrace and the bridge, and from there we can climb some more steps up to the communal living area. All in all, the interiors of the Oliver Classic 20 can be accessed by four means.

We chose to enter by the bridge, set on a level with the terrace. From here we can enjoy the excellent visibility provided by the height of the superstructure and the large wrap-round windows, whilst savouring the pleasures of navigation, whether sat in the individual seat at the helm station, steering the boat, or accommodated on the sofa set to starboard which is accompanied by a table with folding leaves ideal for breakfast or to take an aperitif. There is also a stern facing chart table, in front of which is the stairway down to the communal living area, which includes the galley and the combined saloon cum dining area.

The galley is located furthest aft and constitutes two benches set either side together with a central isle. Oliver Design have displayed their ingenuity here by managing to install in a relatively small space, oven, microwave, large fridge with combined freezer, dishwasher and washer/dryer, the domestic appliances all being camouflaged by wooden screens, likewise a large larder with pull-out racks. In addition, both the central isle and the benches are fitted with either pull out or folding extensions to provide additional work surface. The forward section has been reserved for the saloon cum dining area, made up of an L shaped sofa and a folding leaf table set to port and a furniture unit housing a concealed 22-inch LCD screen to starboard.

The accommodation zone is distributed both forward and aft of this communal area, accessed in both cases by descending a stairway. Aft, at full beam, is the owner’s extremely light cabin, which includes a spacious study and a great deal of in-built stowage capacity. As previously mentioned, from here a door provides direct access to the cockpit. In the en suite bathroom both the shower and lavatory are separated by sliding screens. What is more, the latter also has a door onto the gangway making it a convenient facility for daytime use. In the forward section there is one double cabin and two cabins with berths to each side, the access doors of which are sliding. One of these has a private bathroom whilst the other shares that of the double cabin.

The layout does in fact demonstrate that this is a family boat. Nevertheless, to avoid waiting to use the bathroom, in each cabin there is a neat washstand duly camouflaged with a wooden top, in such a way that it can also be used as a small table. This, together with the elaborate bronze taps, is only one of the many details which make the Oliver Classic 20 so exceptional, its warm interior décor, in teak combined with blue and white upholstery, makes this boat inviting to live in for long periods.

Safe and easy to handle, in addition to being exceptional and original, the Oliver Classic 20 is considerably safe. Its U-shaped careening lines have been designed to achieve the best performance in terms of stability and autonomy. The displacement hull, with its streamlined bow, cuts through the sea enabling passengers to enjoy comfortable and tranquil voyages, at the maximum 10 knots speed, made possible by the two MAN 315 hp engines. This boat’s 20 metres length and 38-ton displacement are extraordinarily easy to handle thanks to the electronic controls and bow thrusters which have been installed. The generators, air conditioning and the desalination plant, together with the rest of the modern comforts to be had on the Oliver Classic 20, remind us that we are in 2005, although its lines transport us to another era.

The saloon and dining room form a part of the same communal area as the galley, the appliances of which are all concealed by wooden cupboards, including the central isle. The owner enjoys a spacious, bright cabin, with a door which has direct access to the cockpit. In addition, every available corner has been made good use of to stow gear, everything from clothes to money. Wood has also been used in the bathrooms, the taps of which are made in bronze. All the cabins are fitted with a neat washstand concealed beneath a wooden top, which can be used as a small table. The bow section avails itself of a double cabin and two cabins with bunks, the access doors to which are sliding. On occupying almost all the side, they can be opened completely to form a single large cabin, a good option if the occupants are children who need to be watched.’’
