Duchess of Cambridge set to open 1851 Trust Tech Deck centre

The Duchess of Cambridge has arrived in Portsmouth to officially open a new sailing education centre.

The duchess is royal patron of the 1851 Trust which provides training for young people who want to learn about the marine industry.

The charity is supported by Olympic gold medallist Sir Ben Ainslie's sailing team - Land Rover BAR.

The duchess will open the Tech Deck, where the building of their America's Cup boats can be studied up close.

A keen sailor herself, she will also meet year seven students taking part in a digital workshop.

The education programme focuses on the science behind the America's Cup challenge.

Sir Ben won the 34th America's Cup as a member of Oracle Team USA, and launched a new Portsmouth-based team in 2014 alongside the duchess in a bid to bring the trophy home to the UK.

The historic race first took place off the Isle of Wight in England in 1851 but a British team has never won it. Sir Ben will captain the team in 2017.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge travelled to Portsmouth last summer to watch him compete in a qualifying event, but it was abandoned due to extreme weather.
