What is a Brigantine?

A sailing ship Brigantine is a two-masted sailing vessel used in the 18th and 19th centuries for trade, exploration, and warfare. It has two masts with square-rigged sails and a large fore-and-aft sail set on the mizzenmast—making it particularly well-suited for sailing in shallow waters, where larger ships would have difficulty manoeuvring. Brigantines were typically smaller than a frigate but still quite large—they could weigh up to 300 tons and could reach lengths of up to and over 200 feet. Despite their size compared to other large sailing ships, brigantines were usually heavily armed for combat. Brigantines were used for a variety of purposes, including exploration, trade, transportation, and pirate raids.
