Tjalk for sale (sail)

What is a Tjalk?

A River/Canal Boat Tjalk is a type of flat-bottomed sailing vessel traditionally used to transport goods through the network of canals, rivers and lakes of the Netherlands. Built for use in shallow waters, Tjalk boats generally have low sides and low freeboard with a rounded bow, flat bottom and square stern. The masts are adjustable, allowing them to be lowered or raised as needed or to accommodate a different type of rig and sails. These boats have broad-beamed decks and are often brightly painted, and often have decorative carvings around the stern. They have several cabins suitable for extended voyages and small storage rooms. Many are motorized, often with a diesel engine, and some have a large wheelhouse. Today, River/Canal Boat Tjalks are still used in The Netherlands and are popular with pleasure and charter boat cruisers who appreciate their unique design and stable hull characteristics.
