The Sherman Hoyt-designed "Lara," an 8mR boat built in 1929 by the esteemed Nevins yard in New York, is now located in Helsinki, Finland. With an overall length of 14.24 metres and a beam of 2.44 metres, "Lara" has seen extensive use and upgrades over her history, including a new deck, cockpit, and the replacement of underwater planks. Notably, in 2020, an 18hp Yanmar diesel engine was added to aid in manoeuvring, without significantly affecting her speed. Constructed with a mahogany hull on oak frames and fitted with a teak deck, "Lara" showcases exquisite craftsmanship. She is equipped with an aluminium mast and North Sails Kevlar sails and races in the SIRA class at the Worlds. The interior is equipped for comfort with four bunks, a galley, a toilet, and portable caskets for cruising gear. Known for her stunning lines and impressive speed, particularly in light wind, "Lara" is both a formidable racer and a delightful cruiser.
Lara is a 1929 Shermann Hoyt design built at the famous Nevins yard on City Island, New York. Lara sailed the East Coast of United States until late 1970’s, until sold to Toronto, Canada, where she was actively raced from the Royal Canadian Yacht Club. In 1993 Lara was acquired to Helsinki, Finland, where she has continued racing. Lara has had extensive work done over the years, including a new deck and cockpit, renewal of the underwater planks and interior. In 2020 she had a 18hp Yanmar diesel engine installed to make manoevring to port and short-handed easier. The engine has been installed so that it is reasonably easy to remove, if required for racing. The engine has not had major effect on the speed.
Lara has beautiful lines and is magically fast especially in light wind. Her hull is mahogany on oak frames. The use of bronze screws has minimized corrosion and therefore the original oak frames are still in good condition. The teak deck was renewed in 1995. The layout was designed to suit racing better. In the Worlds Lara races in the SIRA class, which is the largest sub-class. She has an aluminium mast and North Sales kevlar sails (incl. main, no 1, no 2 and no 3 and spinnakers). The running rigging and trims have been designed so that she is also easy to sail short-handed. The interior is stylish and has been fitted with four bunks, galley, toilet and two portable mahogany caskets for cruising gear. During racing the caskets are left ashore making the cockpit spaceous for the crew.
Lara is an absolute joy to sail. She is a fast racer, but also fun to cruise. Her beauty catches lot of attention. More photos: https://www.facebook.com/8mRLara
