About this Hylas 46

English

Broker Comments: The Hylas 46 has always been one of my favorite designs, by one of my favorite designers, ever since I worked commissioning these boats new in Fort Lauderdale at the turn of the millennium.  Boats of this caliber do not come up for sale often enough in the Caribbean, so this chance to jump at a well cared for quality boat that is ALREADY HERE IN THE BVI should not be missed.   This vessel, hull number 063 , was originally  personally owned by Dick Jachney and sold to her current and second owners, in 2011.  She has been used very little each year, and put away with great care to ensure minimizing ageing of her beautifully kept finishes and equipment.  She shows like a boat that has been kept in New England with glistening stainless, clear plastics, shiny gelcoat and paint, and all in all does not at all appear to be an island boat in any way, except her perfect suitability for Caribbean cruising with a couple onboard.   Low hours, absolutely pristine and ready to hand over immediately, this always private, well kept yacht stands head and shoulders above most offerings found in the Caribbean any year.

What's she like to sail?

The word is 'reassuring'. The Hylas 46 has an easily-driven hull and enough sail power to push her through the water but let's look at the figures. Her sail area/displacement number, 19.3, suggests she?s a medium displacement cruiser, not a heavy ocean boat or an inshore cruiser, but in cruising trim with full tanks she displaces nearly 28,000 lbs, which drops her number to 14.4, that of heavy displacement cruisers. In that trim, she will comfortably cope with heavy weather. With electric furling for genoa and main, she is easily handled solo, which is essential on ocean passages. The elevated helm position feels secure rather than exposed, although low freeboard means the odd dusting of spray makes it to the cockpit. On passage, one could happily tuck in under the sprayhood and keep watch from there. As blue water cruisers go, she?s really quite rewarding to helm.

She's ideal for a crew of two. With electric winches and furling, she's easily managed and confidence will come from that. When you want to invite guests, the appointments in their en suite cabin will keep them very comfortable. The galley is kitted out with everything you need to entertain and the saloon is highly convivial. Just make sure your guests have booked a return flight or they'll never leave.

Hull construction is of solid fiberglass with longitudinal stringers; the deck and cabin top are cored. The overall build quality is good with a very luxurious interior feel regardless of trim choice. One of the unique features of the 'classic' Hylas designs is the large sugar-scoop transom with what we often refer to as 'The garage'  - The transom steps fold up revealing a large space to supplement the already ample aft deck locker storage.  The larger-than-average aft deck and wide side decks allow quick and easy access to the entire length of the boat.

These boats usually survey well with consistently good build quality and workmanship. On the brokerage market, Hylas Yachts have proven to hold their value and seem to sell quickly !
