About this MJM Yachts 34z Downeast

English

Margarita

is one of the last 34z's built and a beautiful example of one of the most popular couples cruiser ever built. She comfortably seats 6 in the pilothouse which can be opened up on all sides with the opening windshield windows and roll up aft and side glass.  With the single Yanmar and bow and stern thrusters she is easy to maneuver around the docks single handed and easy on the pocketbook with no exposed exterior varnished wood and simple systems.

The timeless MJM 34z is known for its dry, responsive, sporty and comfortable ride.  Designed by Doug Zurn and built by Boston BoatWorks the 34 is the brainchild of Bob Johnstone (J Boats) and his wife Mary as they worked together to create a downeast pocket cruiser that was well-built, fast, efficient, comfortable and attractive.

Margarita

is well equipped with many of the factory options available at the time, always indoor stored and has brand new canvas and strataglass enclosure in the pilothouse. She is out of the water for the season and can be seen by appointment.

Construction

The MJM 34Z hull is cored with Corecell closed cell foam in wet pre-pregged E-glass and Kevlar on the outer skin and then solid laminate on the centerline, chine flats and rail edge.  The exterior laminate is Kevlar, hence the description of the layup as being composite.  All laminate is laid up in Gougeon System epoxy.  The reason for this is three fold:

  1. Epoxy when cured has a similar elongation and bending characteristic as the fiberglass and Kevlar itself there for over millions of cyclical loads there will be less breakdown between the resin and the rest of the laminate compared to vinylester and polyester resin
  2. Epoxy has the greatest water resistence of any resin
  3. Epoxy has the greatest chemical bond to the laminate.  After the structure is completed the hull & deck are heated to 140 degrees for 3 days to fully post cure all resin; in total providing the strongest, lightest, most easily driven hull in the industry.
