Wooden Ships Comments on this Cheoy Lee Laurent Giles Vertue

Laurent Giles Vertue built by the Cheoy Lee Shipyard in Hong Kong in 1963.  Vertue No.121.

Cheoy Lee built 15 Vertues, all planked in teak with hardwood frames and centreline structure and are sought after examples of this beloved design.  Vertues gained a name for being exceptionally seaworthy yachts capable of blue water sailing, most notably Vertue XXXV sailed by Sir Humphrey Barton, but there were numerous lesser known boats that undertook incredible voyages.  One such example was Speedwell of Hong Kong, a Vertue built by Cheoy Lee and sailed back to England before further voyages to the Caribbean and South Africa.

This boat is the long doghouse model with 2 windows in the dog house, increasing the internal space over the earlier designs.

She has been well maintained in recent years with history of keel bolts being checked, engine overhauled, new running rigging and a new mainsail in 2019.  In need of some cosmetic improvement but otherwise a lovely example with lots of original chromed bronze deck fittings.

Some of the floors across the centreline are sawn timber, probably yacal, interspersed with galvanised steel floors which was a common construction method employed by Cheoy Lee.

Stainless steel standing rigging to internal stainless chain plates.  Rigging new in 2003.

2 pairs of spreaders with twin lower shrouds, intermediate shroud and a cap shroud.  Standing backstay to a bumpkin.  Forestay to the stemhead and removable inner forestay.

In 2019 both sets of spreaders were replaced, the mast stripped and re-varnished and the standing rigging checked.  Mast wiring and VHF antenna replaced in 2019.
