About this SHE 36

Named in honour of Alain Catherinau, who rescued 8 crew from a sinking yacht during the notorious 1979 Fastnet Race on to his SHE 36 Lorelei, Legionnaire is one of the last of the Sparkman & Stephens designed SHE 36s built. She has just completed a through refit overseen by her experienced owner and a marine surveyor, whose report is available to interested parties. Highlights include revarnished interior joinery, new upholstery, standing rigging from 2018, seven sails all recently valeted and laundered, serviced life-raft and 28hp Beta from 2000. Provenance and history galore. And ready to go! ( Interior photos to follow shortly.)

Only the acquisition of a very special Bowman 40 has forced the sale of lovely Legionnaire. The time has come for me to go for a slightly more cruising oriented boat.

The She 36 is one of the finest and most attractive of the 1970s fast cruisers, designed and built to a very high standard, fit to go to sea in just about anything. "Legionnaire" is a late example of this classic S&S fin and skeg design with the excellent " SHE" deck and lovely teak joinery throughout. Built to Lloyds Register of Shipping 100A1. Modern yachts are simply not built like this anymore.

South Hants Engineering had a strong reputation for building quality Sparkman & Stephens designed yachts up until the early 1980’s.

The She 36 was their flagship yacht, producing some 46 in total from 1975/1981. Legionnaire (completed summer 1980) was one of the last ones constructed.

There is a close resemblance to the much admired Swan 38, also a Sparkman & Stephens design from the same period. Although only slightly smaller, the difference still helps to make the She 36 much easier to handle for single handed sailing – or just couples. Also, the She-deck is very effective in grip, looks stunning, hardwearing & low in maintenance (unlike teak decks of this era)

In the notorious 1979 Fastnet Race, a She 36 (Lorelei) saved eight lives from the sunken yacht Griffin (ODD 34). The French owner & skipper was awarded 1979 Yachtsman of the Year award & the Legion de Honour (the highest French Civilian Medal for bravery). In the publication “Narrative of a Fastnet Rescue” Alain Catherineau (Lorelei’s owner/skipper) made Introductory reference to Sparkman & Stephens (who designed most of Ted Heath’s Morning Clouds) –

“Dominating the sailing world for several decades, their knowledge enabled us to carry out a rescue in difficult wind & sea conditions…. This account, which I dedicate to them is an acknowledgement of my indebtedness”.

There is an abundance of History Information (even including original purchase details/correspondence) with Legionnaire – which was named in honour of the Frenchman’s bravery & seamanship in his own She 36.

Legionnaire has recently been subject to ongoing upgrades, overseen by a Marine Surveyor for which a Report is to be issued. Described as a fine yacht, she is being sold with a heavy heart by the owner (having already previously owned a She 36) – the reason being is that he has purchased a Bowman 40 (as they are also built to the same Lloyds +100A1 Standard as the She 36).
