About this Fairey Huntsman 28

English

Suncracker was acquired by the current owner in 2006. She has been used primarily for two person cruising holidays along the South Coast from her base on the River Medina. Over this period, she has proved to be mechanically sound and reliable. Several structural enhancements have been carried out, notably the replacement and strengthening of the forward keel section in 2014/15, and a year later (after being hit whilst moored) the transom was replaced and epoxy sheaved. The opportunity was also taken at this time to renew the rudder stocks. Replacement and additional covers have also been acquired. A general condition survey carried out in 2017 at the request of the Insurers concluded that: “Suncracker was found to be a well-constructed motor launch that is in sound and generally good condition.” Since November 2019 she has been laid up ashore at Island Harbour Marina on the Isle of Wight, fully decommissioned.

ACCOMMODATION & GALLEY

Accommodation

The cabin is entered through a central doorway and down two steps. Immediately to port is the galley with a stainless steel sink, freshwater tap and two burner gas cooker with grill. Food and cooking utensils are kept under the main galley unit in a spacious locker.

Immediately to starboard is the toilet compartment with its manual sea toilet mounted on a plinth outboard under the side deck with the pull-out wash basin and hand operated fresh water pump immediately above. There is a night light and roof ventilator.

Forward of the galley and heads are two large single settee/berths in a U-shaped configuration with stowage space underneath. Outboard under the side decks are full length shelves. A dining table, stored when not in use under the settee/berths, fits between the berths. The forward bulkhead comprises four large drawers with mirror fronted hanging lockers on either side. In the cabin roof is an escape/ventilation hatch. The cabin has full standing headroom and the fabric upholstery is clean and attractive. There are three double shore power sockets in the cabin, two with USB points.

In the cockpit, the helm position is to port and comprises a single helm seat in front of a comprehensive array of instruments with the navigation aids grouped neatly around. The curved windscreen gives excellent visibility and the boat can be driven sitting or standing. There is a matching seat to starboard and two further seats, currently inward facing but can which be adjusted to aft facing. All four seats are mounted on the engine compartment covers and are easily removable to allow access to the engine compartment.

To the rear of the cockpit is a full width transom seat incorporating two lockers and further stowage space in between. To port under the side deck is a shelf and a double external shore power socket with waterproof covers. To starboard under the side deck is a fender stowage cradle. The cockpit floor and engine covers are teak on marine ply. Panels are incorporated in the floor which allow easy access to the bilges and for checking fuel tank levels.

A sprayhood and backdrop enclose the cockpit for when the boat is not in use, and a full aft cockpit canopy incorporating windows can replace the backdrop to create a large and sociable space for all weathers. This has removable sides to create a bimini effect. The sides have roll up sections, as does the aft section of the canopy.

The side decks are sensibly wide with grab rails available along their length for going forward from the cockpit. The foredeck is enclosed by a strong stainless steel pulpit rail. Mooring cleats and fairleads are chromed and the decks have been epoxied and painted with non-slip deck paint.
