Broker's Comments

threebeans is an extensively and thoughtfully modified Santa Cruz 37. She is hull #9 (the last hull of these boats produced), built in 2009 in Jacksonville, Florida, and modified in 2010 and 2017. The boat has been raced and cruised in Long Island Sound waters, with several trips to Narragansett Bay, the Cape and the Islands, and one passage to Bermuda.

Her sleek exterior lines and racing-oriented deck layout hide a comfortable, well-appointed interior, and with her carbon construction and light displacement, the boat is easily driven. She can be singlehanded, doublehanded, cruised with a limited crew, or raced with a full crew. Rarely does one come across a boat that is this versatile.

She has been laid up inside every winter save one, and she has been carefully maintained by one owner since she was launched new in May 2009.

Owner's Comments

Twelve years ago, looking for a 35’ to 40’ racer-cruiser, few if any boats offered a capability of speed under sail while being uncompromising in comforts and conveniences usually found on larger, more expensive, and slower boats. The same remains true today, and after sailing thousands of miles, this boat has taken care of family and friends, and created lifelong memories along the way.

She is equipped with a cruisy interior, with hot and cold pressure water, a cockpit shower, a retractable sprit that does not encroach into the v-berth, a private head, on-deck cockpit storage and an anchor locker. Above deck, there’s a square-top mainsail, race-boat sail controls like in-haulers and adjustable jib leads, twin tack lines and twin spinnaker halyards for peels, and a headstay which can be either furled or used with twin grooves and twin jib halyards for sail changes.

In the pursuit of making a good boat better, this is the only Santa Cruz 37 that has been cared for, and improved, to this extent. In 2017, the owner commenced a “turbo” project to enhance the performance of the boat. The work was designed by Tim Kernan to ISO regulations and was executed by New England Boatworks in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.

To improve upwind performance, the draft of the boat was increased to 8’-5” (from 7’-6”), by removing the existing bulb, sleeving the existing fin with an 11” extension, and reinstalling the bulb. In addition, the fin was faired out to a wider profile. Together, this improvement increases righting moment, lift, and adds a more forgiving “groove,” with only a minor weight increase of 124 pounds.

In order to give the boat more sailing length, a 106 pound, 2’ long carbon fiber sugar scoop was added. This enhancement decreased drag coming off the heeled transom of the boat while adding upwind and reaching speed with waterline length, but possibly decreased the boat’s high-wind downwind boat speed potential — a suitable trade, since those downwind running conditions are rare and, eventually, you have to sail back upwind again...

However, to ensure that the boat had a little more horsepower and to negate any additional drag from weight or from the deeper keel, twin top-mast backstays were added to allow for a square-top mainsail which adds 31 square feet, most of which is up high, to the upwind and downwind sail plan.
