About this Heard Mevagissey Tosher 20 Falmouth Working Boat

Ruby, a beautiful Heard Mevagissey Tosher 20 Falmouth Working Boat built circa 1996 by Heard in Mylor Bridge with racing spars and sails. A very fast and competitive boat offering much more space than the 18' while still only drawing a little over 3'. Her speed and stability on the helm are very satisfying.

To answer some questions received publicly:

She is 20 feet on deck, 28' overall including her bow sprit. She is standing in a yard and can be rigged, launched and enjoyed immediately as she is.

I will sell Ruby for £8,500 as she stands, unrigged and unlaunched excluding an outboard, trailer or mooring. All her sails are freshly serviced and in excellent condition.

She is £9,000 as above but rigged and launched.

I had planned to do further cosmetic work to her to include: a light sanding of her Iroko deck, polishing the hull and painting the bilge and cockpit floor up to the undersides of the gunnels.

She is £10,000 launched and rigged with the cosmetic work completed.

Her mooring off Admiralty Quay in Mylor is available for £600. The 2 stroke 5hp Yamaha is available for £450. I won't sell either separately from the boat.

Spacious daysailer, racer or cruiser

Traditional 20' open sailing boat with a large, deep cockpit able to comfortably accommodate larger crews for racing or day sailing. We regularly took an extended family crew of 9 out with no shortage of space. Also great fun for cruising and camping but that is limited to four adults or five people if children are younger.

Quality build, fittings, equipment and mooring

Ruby has a long keel drawing 1.07 metres, ideal for local waters. She is made of a heavy layup GRP typical of these sturdy working boats with red topsides and a copper coated hull. Unusually, Ruby benefits from Iroko wooden decks laid by her second owner, a craftsman who also raced her successfully with his family for many years. This makes her look and feel very special.

There is a high quality fit out throughout with heavy duty Anderson winches for the large jib, hollow racing spars and a full racing rig, which combine to make her immediately competitive. If you are only intending to cruise, you would still benefit from her speed, especially in light winds. I have added a second reef line in her main sail should a family wish to power down the rig at higher wind speeds in combination with tge smaller stay sail. All sails are in excellent condition having been freshly serviced by SKB.

Covid-19 has restricted access to her during the winter months, leaving some minor cosmetic jobs to be completed. We renovated the spars and other varnished surfaces last year, as well as the rudder being relaminated by Gaffers and Luggers.

All the standing- and running rugging is in excellent condition. Ruby also has a full boom tent. This allowed our family to explore estuaries and camp aboard her during the summer months. It is quick to fit and keeps her very dry at anchor. There are large fenders, beaching legs and a CQR anchor to enable any type of mooring.

Ruby has a lifting outboard motor bracket and requires just a small 2.5 to 6hp. She can be sold with a 5hp 2 stroke Yamaha by separate negotiation, though we prefer to keep the engine. Similarly, any new buyer could opt to take her mooring, which is off Admiralty Quay in Mylor, Cornwall and available until 1st October by separate negotiation.

Needing a good home

Ruby is very special and will be greatly missed. She has given me the most sailing pleasure of all the boats we have owned and is the only one of this size that has enabled two families to get out together in comfort at the same time. I have many more photos but these all include family and friends enjoying a sail on Ruby, which I prefer not to publish publicly. We have decided to sell her to fund a cabin boat and are looking to find a good home to enjoy her next. She is £10,000 ovno, which represents great value for a boat of this quality and beauty. Please get in touch to discuss.
