About this X-Yachts Xp 44

FURTHER BROKER’S COMMENTS:

KIYA is a lovingly maintained and beautifully presented example of the award-winning X-Yachts Xp 44 from the Danish yard’s ‘Xperformance’ range. Designed to incorporate the very latest technologies in weight saving, strength, and quality, all in the quest of effortless speed, KIYA is just perfect for those that like to cover ground quickly, easily and in comfort.

KIYA’s specification highlights include:-

• Standard 2.30m keel making her ideal for Baltic cruising

• Epoxy system to hull

• Carbon reinforced hull grid

• 3-cabin, 2-heads standard layout with sliding chart table arrangement

• Teak side decks, coachroof and cockpit

• Retractable 12vDC bowthruster

• Electric main halyard winch

• North sail package including Code Zero with furler and gennaker with snuffer

OWNER’S COMMENTS:

Before we acquired KIYA, we had owned another X-Yacht trendsetter, names the X-412 from new. When we saw drawings of the new Xp 44, we knew immediately that X-Yachts had just managed to create the next world-class trendsetting performance yacht for family sailing and racing. We were no disappointed. KIYA sails like a dream – upwind, no one beats her and downwind is a lot of fun. She offers spacious cabins for us, our grown up kids, and friends with wide berths throughout and further racing berths in each aft cabin.

We have sailed KIYA in the Baltics and have also made it to Bergen on the west coast of Norway. Sailing in the open ocean and even in strong winds is not a problem for KIYA and she remains safe and easy to handle for my wife and I alone.

We are now letting go of KIYA only to upgrade to a larger X-Yacht with a 4-cabin solution able to accommodate an enlarged family and group of friends, now sailing with us every year. The next owner of KIYA will not be disappointed.

MANUFACTURER’S COMMENTS:

The Xp 44 combines impressive performance with simplicity of handling, appealing to all the family. This model was the first of the Xperformance line to be launched, and was named Sailing World’s ‘Yacht of the Year’ in 2014.

A highly optimised hull shape offers exemplary performance in a range of wind conditions, on all angles of sail, under both ORC and IRC handicap systems. Key elements of the hull design include reduced upright beam and wetted surface area, while the transom shape ensures that as windspeed builds and the boat powers up, the overall waterline length increases for additional speed.

Exterior

The Xp 44 deck layout has been designed for ease of sail handling and manoeuvres whether racing or cruising. Standard features include a below deck furling drum (with furling line led back to halyard winch), low friction racing blocks, large self-tailing winches, and adjustable jib cars and tracks, while there is also the option of powered winches.

All halyards and trim lines are concealed below deck and led aft to self-tailing coachroof winches. The main-sheet is led along the boom to the gooseneck, down to deck-recessed blocks, then below the side decks to dedicated winches within easy reach of the helmsman for safe, stress-free short-handed sailing.

Interior

The Xp 44 interior is offered in a three cabin layout, which benefits from exemplary use of light and space. Ample natural light from the flush-mounted hatches and opening portlights creates a welcoming space throughout. A choice of high quality interior finishes allow owners to create an interior that is both elegant and practical, with high quality fittings.

The secure galley is arranged in an L-shaped configuration for safe working at sea. A gimballed two-jet gas cooker and cool box are fitted as standard. Options include a three-jet cooker with oven and grill, 65-litre fridge and microwave oven.

The saloon table also incorporates concealed storage for bottles and similar items, and is completely removable to facilitate crew movement and sail storage whilst racing.

YACHTING PRESS REMARKS:

With great attention to the details of construction, gear and layout, X-Yachts lays claim to the performance end of the spectrum.

When the breeze is on, just about any sailboat will get up and go, but it's the light-air days that make you appreciate a well-designed and balanced hull, an efficient sail plan and a responsive rudder. It was the latter conditions that we were dealt the morning after the U.S. Sailboat Show in Annapolis, Maryland, when we went for a test sail aboard the new Xp 44 from X-Yachts.

“Sailed beautifully, steered beautifully, everything was executed very, very well,” concluded Boat of the Year judge Mark Schrader afterward. The Xp 44 was the first boat we’d sailed after the show and it set the bar quite high for the remainder of the fleet throughout a week of sea trials.

Indeed, the entire three-judge panel left the Xp 44 that day extolling its looks, construction, gear and, most of all, the time each got to spend on the helm...

X-Yachts has been building sailboats in Denmark for nearly four decades. Racing has long been in the company’s design DNA, and principal designer Niels Jeppesen has a long list of winners on his resume. But along the way, X-Yachts has also attracted the attention of a wider community of sailors, both for its Xc line of family cruisers and its Xp performance-oriented racer cruisers…

X-Yachts builds 100 to 110 boats a year and its construction methods are top notch. The hull and deck of the 44 are epoxy-infused foam-and-glass sandwiches, reinforced with carbon fiber in high-load areas. A carbon-fiber keel grid is bonded to the hull, as are the hull liner and furniture for added stiffness. The 44 is the first X-Yacht to use the carbon keel grid, which replaces a galvanized steel ring found in other models. The change was made to add strength and reduce weight. Weight savings are also achieved by using foam-cored composites in fabricating some of the furniture. The result is a sailboat that is light, strong and easily driven, but capable of standing to its canvas when conditions kick up.

The Xp 44 is a sailor’s boat and the interior reflects this; it’s elegant, but at the same time, simple and functional. White fiberglass panels and light-color upholstery are set off by just enough teak trim to make the cabin seem rich and inviting. There are vented hanging lockers in the twin double aft cabins. A compact but well-outfitted galley sits to port of the companionway stairs, a head and shower (a perfect wet hanging locker) to starboard. Forward of the galley, an L-shaped dinette is big enough to seat a crew but the settee can double as a sea berth. To starboard a long settee can be broken up by a cocktail table or the table can move aft to become the nav station, rendering a second midship sea berth. A generously sized owners’ cabin with head and shower and a hanging locker is forward of the mast.”

“From a sailor’s perspective, what’s not to love?”
