About this Hylas 46

English

Very rare UK-delivered and CE-marked German Frers Hylas 46 launched in 2009. Absolutely huge cruising spec with push-button cutter rig, genset, watermaker, air-con and so on.

FURTHER BROKER’S COMMENTS:

The Hylas 46 has it all, elegance, performance and style. She is beautifully built and this one really does have it all. ADINA is absolutely bristling with equipment for blue water and extended sailing.

“A capable and very livable center-cockpit, it hits the target for what most cruisers are looking for today. Like all Hylas models the 46 is built like a rock with first-rate gear”

“I have plenty of offshore miles on this model and wouldn’t hesitate to take it anywhere”

Quotes from ‘Sailing a Serious Ocean’ by John Kretschmer

ADINA is a true bluewater cruiser and features with pictures and text in the RCC Pilotage Foundation ‘The Pacific Cruising Guide’ Kitty Van Hagen and ‘The Atlantic Cruising Guide’ Jane Russell

ADINA is totally ready to undertake the challenge under new ownership and comes ready with an encyclopedic inventory including:-

• Masthead sloop with cutter rig (main, staysail, yankee sail)

• Electric in-mast furling, electric yankee furler and suite of electric winches

• North Sails NPL Tour Norlam Xi laminate sails

• New Symmetric Spinnaker associated running rigging

• 4.5kw DC generator (Fischer Panda)

• Hydro generator (Sea & Watt)

• Solar panels

• Watermaker (Horizon Safari)

• Air-conditioning

• Iridium Go! satellite phone

• New SSB (IC M802) with Pactor modem

• Bowthruster

• New standing rigging

• Full navigation suite including AIS, Radar

• Large separate fridge and freezer

Yachts like ADINA rarely come up for sale. With the best part of half a million pounds invested in her commissioning and continued expenditure throughout her current ownership in terms of maintenance and upgrades, her extremely reasonable asking price represents an unmissable opportunity for anyone looking to take on an ARC, World ARC, independent bluewater cruising or simply comfortable warm-weather liveaboard cruising.

HISTORY:

Delivered new at the end of 2008 as a 2009 model and with a very full options list. She was lightly used around the Solent and English Channel ahead of a planned ‘big trip’ by her then owners but a change of their circumstances cut plans short. ADINA’s next owners completed a well-documented circumnavigation starting in 2013 and taking in many countries including the Galapagos, French Polynesia, Fiji, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Seychelles, Madagascar and South Africa.

In 2018 the current owner bought her and started to prepare her for the next Round the World adventure. There have been extensive maintenance and comprehensive checks undertaken in the preparation. However, a planned departure in 2019 was delayed due to personal circumstances and now again in 2020.

MANUFACTURER’S COMMENTS:

Form and function combine with the keen eye and steady hand of renowned designer German Frers to produce this "must-see" cruising yacht. A true watertight collision bulkhead forward and another aft define the 46 as a serious offshore yacht.

But it gets even better. Step below into a world of refined elegance, beautifully hand-finished teak furniture, splendid totally private comfort for two couples, plus room for up to three additional guests. Abundant storage, unsurpassed electrical and mechanical systems. Top-shelf hardware in every application. A fantastic seagoing galley worthy of a much larger yacht.

In addition to a commanding specification that has been refined by thousands of miles at sea and the invaluable input of our many yacht owners, the Hylas 46 sparkles with a confident profile, a robust and modern sail plan, and a generous beam that carries well aft to provide both excellent stability and more interior volume than other yachts, all in just 46 feet.

YACHTING PRESS REVIEWS:

Yachting Monthly – October 2017 – Feature reviewing ADINA herself.

“What’s she like to Sail?

‘With electric furling for genoa and main, she is easily handled solo, which is essential on ocean passages. The elevated helm position feels secure rather than exposed, although low freeboard means the odd dusting of spray makes it into the cockpit. On passage, I could have tucked myself in under the sprayhood and keep watch from there. Switch off the autopilot and shes pleasing to steer, tight and responsive, but don’t expect the sort of feedback you’d get with a balanced spade rudder. As bluewater cruisers go, she’s really quite rewarding to helm.

What’s she like in port and anchor?

With the bimini up and the sprayhood down, the elevated cockpit will be shaded and high enough to catch a gentle breeze. Then step down onto the sidedecks, fold out the transom’s bathing ladder, grab your mask and snorkel from the transom locker and explore the reef. Rinse off the salt with the deck shower, then settle in the cockpit and grab the cold beer passed through the hatch to the galley. There is a boarding ladder in the lifelines for clambering aboard from a tender or pontoon and at the bow there’s a saltwater deck hose for cleaning the anchor and chain.

Down below, the aircon and fans will keep you cool in warmer climes. In more temperate areas there are plenty of opening hatches for ventilation, all fitted with fly screens. The owner’s cabin aft is the more sumptuous of the two but the guest cabin is well appointed with a decent amount of stowage. Both cabins are en suite and on a 46ft blue water cruiser, any more than two cabins is wasting space.

Would she suit you and your crew?

She’s a tried and tested solution for comfortable ocean cruising. She has solar panels on the sprayhood, a Watt & Sea towed generator that fits in a transom bracket, generous tankage, reliable generator and watermaker. The build quality throughout is exceptional and when you need to wield a spanner, as ocean cruisers must, you’ll love the maintenance access.

She’s ideal for a crew of two. With electric winches, furling and bowthruster, she’s easily managed and confidence will come from that. When you want to invite guests, the appointments in their en suite cabin will keep them very comfortable. The galley is kitted out with everything you need to entertain and the saloon is highly convivial. Just make sure your guests have booked a return flight or they’ll never leave.”

Cruising World Review:

"The Hylas 46 comes with extensive standard equipment and an abundance of top quality name brand gear. I deem her a 'must see' for any serious cruiser." "Certainly worth noting, the Hylas 46 gets "electrical panel award of the year" both for access to wiring and superb quality of its installation." "The Hylas 46 is also notable for an interior comfortable enough to border on plush and systems hard to beat for their meticulous installations." "There is excellent (engine) access at the front with further access through panels on three sides... the plumbing and thru hulls are meticulously labelled and easy to reach" "This is classic German Frers..."

Perry Design Review:

“The people at Hylas have brought us a series of cruising yachts drawn by German Frers and built at the Queen Long yard in Taiwan. I always liked the clean and modern styling of this yard's detailing. They've never built one of my designs, but I always wished they would.

Frers has one of the best eyes in the business, and his track record - from Maxis to Grand Prix racers - speaks for itself. This new Hylas is an effort to update the line and build on the center-cockpit concept.

At first glance at the profile you can see the effect of today's emphasis on sailing length. Overhangs forward and aft have been eroded away to a DWL of 39 feet and a D/L of 196. This 46-footer has an L/B ratio of 3.36. It's a very attractive hull shape with a pronounced forefoot knuckle at the cutwater and an even distribution of rocker fore and aft.

The rudder is a partially balanced spade with a small fractional skeg, which allows for a lower bearing for strength. The Hylas 46 has staterooms for two couples, with additional sleeping space available on the main cabin settees… The Hylas also has two heads and each has an adjoining shower stall.

Note also that the Hylas has moved the head forward of the berth in what we usually call a Pullman-style double forward. The shape of the bow severely limits how far forward you can push the head, with the result being that, in this model, you get a big forepeak.

On deck there are unusually wide side decks: a feature that I like. Excessively wide cabin trunks can and do create the feeling of airiness and space below; but they inhibit side deck width and put undue pressure on sheet leads and deck arrangements in general.

You can trust that German Frers would not give you a slug. This boat has the numbers and the pedigree to give it good performance. Aesthetically, center-cockpit boats under 50 feet are a challenge, but this one is okay… I do like the sexy hull shape; and it is for this reason alone I think the new Hylas 46 will make some of its competition look dated.”
