About this Malo 36

English

A very high-quality Scandinavian built, aft cockpit cruising yacht. Well-appointed below decks offering comfortable accommodation for 6 with two double cabins. Refitted in 2012 for comfortable short-handed, all-weathers cruising.

FURTHER BROKER’S COMMENTS:

Commissioned in 2003 and in only her second ownership, HELVICK has been very lightly used for just a few weeks of each year.

Her aft cockpit design stands her apart from other Scandinavian built cruising yachts of this size. With the fixed windscreen forward and targa arch supported spray hood and substantial coamings outboard the cockpit is well protected in all weathers. The mainsheet being mount on top of the arch leaves the cockpit completely clear of obstructions. Below decks the large open plan saloon and galley provide a comfortable and bright living space. Her sleeping cabins have generously sized bunks with lots of storage throughout the living space.

HELVICK’s specification highlights include:

• Tides Marine ultra low friction mainsail slide system for fully-battened mainsail

• Stackpack and lazyjacks

• Andersen winches

• Upgraded mainsheet system

• Removable inner forestay with hank-on staysail

• Cruising chute with snuffer

• Raymarine radar chart plotter at chart table and at helm

• Standalone secondary helm chart plotter with AIS

• Eberspacher heating

• Seawater cooled refrigeration

• Electric heads

• Sprung mattress in master cabin

• Fitted carpets

OWNER’S COMMENTS:

I purchased Helvick from the first owner in late 2008. She was berthed in Mercury Marina, in the Hamble. She had hardly been used and there were less than 50 hours on the engine. We left her there for the winter, and brought her to Malahide in 2009.

As I was busy with other projects, she was not used extensively during 2009 to 2011. During the winter of 2011 and early 2012 she was upgraded with new sails, inner forestay, sprayhood and cockpit covers and a host of small items changed, with the intention of cruising her for extended periods. She was cruised in 2012 from mid-April until October. In 2013 she was again cruised during the summer months. But in 2014 and 2015 she was sailed for only two weeks each year, and since then, she has seen only 7-8 weeks use each year, remaining out of commission between times.

HELVICK is very comfortable boat to live in and to sail, with loads of storage space, and it is with deep regret that she has to be sold, but the time has come to accept that a smaller yacht may suit my available time and cruising plans. Throughout my ownership she has been improved and upgraded and kept in first class condition and she is now for sale with all her inventory, cruising gear and extras, all of which are in good order.

If it is a Malo 36 you are looking for, this is the one to view – she is in such great condition she won’t fail to impress.

MANUFACTURER HISTORY:

Johannes Olsson started the company 1939, building wooden yachts. Johannes’ sons, Bo and Orvar Olsson took over the business in 1963 and built their first GRP Malö Yachts in 1969. Lars and Bengt Olsson, sons of Bo assumed responsibility of Malö Yachts in 1984 and ran the company until 2008 when Bob Erixon bought the yard.

Malö Yachts is now part of Sweden Yachts Group, which also encompasses Sweden Yachts, CR Yachts and Regina of Vindö.

SPECIFICATION

CONSTRUCTION

Hull Construction:

• The hull uses a sandwich construction to maximize strength and insulation properties. For impact resistance the outer skin is overbuilt.

• A balsa core is chosen for its superior strength and stiffness.

• To eliminate the possibility of moisture penetration of the core, Malo goes further than most builders – the balsa is removed, and the outer and inner skins are bonded together wherever through-hull fittings are installed.

• The topsides are protected against water penetration by an NGA gel coat that also ensures excellent gloss retention.

• Below the waterline, three layers of epoxy are applied for prevention of osmosis, with anti-fouling on top.

• Substantial rubbing strake molded integral with the hull, protecting the hull sides from damage.

• The rubbing strake is capped with a protective aluminum strip.

• Internally, all stringers and bulkheads are fully laminated in place to create an immensely strong structure.

• Antifoul stripped - 2013

Deck & Superstructure Construction:

• Malo decks and coach roofs are balsa-cored for maximum strength and insulation.

• The deck is moulded with raised sections under all hardware, keeping moisture away from the fasteners, and minimizing the chance of moisture ingress and corrosion.

• Solid aluminum inserts (where many other builders use plastic or plywood) beneath all hardware provide necessary support and additional protection for the core against moisture intrusion.

• The hull to deck joints consist of a bullet proof flanged construction, sealed with polyurethane, bolted and fiber glassed on the inside.

• The cap rails, handrails, and other external woodwork are solid teak.

• The entire deck is laid with 12mm caulked teak to create an excellent, good looking, non-skid surface.

• The decks have scuppers draining to through hulls at the waterline, leaving no dirt streaks down the hull sides.

• All Malo yachts have a large self-draining anchor well in the bow with room not only for windlass and calibrated chain but also fenders and mooring lines.

• The anchor locker bulkhead is watertight to the rest of the hull.

Keel & Rudder:

• The lead ballast keel is attached with multiple stainless-steel bolts.

• A Malo rudder is solid fiberglass, as opposed to the more common cored construction that risks moisture penetration and delamination.

• The high tensile stainless-steel stock in SIS 2324 (AISI 329) rides in two sets of roller bearings.

• Malo custom made chain plates are bolted to solid fiberglass bulkheads, as opposed to the more common glass-sheathed plywood: this approach eliminates another potential point of water penetration and rot.
