About this Shannon Cutter

New Walk Through and Owner Interview Video 11/2/20

Ithaca is an excellent example of the classic Shannon 38. This particular boat has been cruised around the world for many years and built a lifetime of memories for her owners. Many of these memories have been captured in a book written by one of the owners:

Shannon 38's have always been built to a very high standard. The rigging is virtually doubled up to assure that in all conditions the mast and rig hold strong. Shannons were designed to be solid offshore cruisers and that is what the current owners did with "Ithaca". In the owner's travels they made significant improvements and have updated, repaired, and replaced various parts of the boat with high end equipment and quality products that reflect the high standards and expectation of the owners. You will not be disappointed. "Ithaca" was built strong when she was new and has only been improved with her updates.

Walk around the deck

Starting in the aft section you will notice the varnish work is all very well maintained and beautiful. The aft is loaded with 2 solar panels, wind generator, propane grill, horseshoe ring, Life sling, outboard engine lift and bracket, davit for the outboard, a spool of line for tying the stern Mediterranean style mooring or dragging a drogue, Garman antenna and full Bimini (which has side curtains), monitor self steering rig, varnished wheel helm, compass, emergency bilge pump, VHF radio ram mic, engine throttle and gear shift, auto pilot control, a bracket for the GPS, primary and secondary winches, extending cockpit table, cockpit cushions, and more goodies stashed in the cockpit lockers that can easily come out for the special occasions and special uses. The propane locker is under the helm seat with 2 propane bottles.

Mounted on the bulkhead to starboard side are 3 Raymarine displays for Depth, Speed, and wind direction and speed. Cockpit speakers surround the cockpit with your choice of music. On the cabin top under the dodger are winch and cleats for the main sheet. On the port side is the engine start, stop, and engine hour gauges. The companionway favors the port side giving more room below on the starboard side. In the cockpit locker on port is the water maker and the refrigeration/freezer compressor is in the starboard cockpit locker. Shore Power cord connectors for step down to 120v cord and a second connection for 240 current power cord.

The Traveler is securely mounted forward of the dodger minimizing the possibility of the main sheet catching someone unprepared in the cockpit in a jibe or tack. The large main cabin hatch and forward cabin hatch can be opened forward or aft facing to allow lots of fresh air and light below. Both the main hatch and the forward hatch are in excellent condition and the varnished wood is well maintained.

There's an interesting modification to all the dorade ventilator boxes. Each one has a "riser" inside the box added to the access opening into the cabin just in case water does happen to get inside the box.

Roller furling genoa and staysail double head sails allow for a balanced helm in all conditions. Full bow pulpit, two large anchors (60# Delta and 45# Bruce), 300' of chain in the anchor locker, and electric windlass fill the bow area. There is an emergency life raft mounted under the mizzen boom.

At the mast, there is a spinnaker pole mounted vertically forward on the mast. There are mast steps for going up and down the mast. The main halyard slide makes raising and dropping the main much easier. There is a separate track for raising the storm trysail. The radar is mounted forward of the mast at the spreaders and the TV antenna is at the top

The main sail cover has lazy jacks and the mainsail easily falls inside the cover for easy zipping everything away when done.

Genoa tracks are along the toe rails to allow for fine tuning the genoa.

Walk Around Below

Going down the companionway which is slightly offset to the port side, the flow forward on the boat tends to favor the port side with the walk through to the bow also slightly on the port side which allows more room on the Starboard side for the galley, main table, the head, and even into the forward cabin.

Going back to the Galley at the base of the companionway on the starboard side is a comfortable arrangement for one person to have easy access to everything the chef might need for preparing and even serving meals to the cockpit or dining table. Counter space on either side of the large double stainless steel sinks (with cutting board that can fit over one sink or the other). The deep freezer is also under the counter top just forward of the Broadwater 4 burner propane stove with oven (really nice stove/oven). Just aft is the Adler - Barbour refrigerator under the counter. Facing aft in the cabinet is the microwave oven just under the spice rack.

Hanging over the galley sink is a large Kerosene lamp and in appropriate sections of the main cabin and forward cabin are smaller kerosene lamps to use when it's preferred not to use battery power for lighting.

Forward of the galley on starboard is the main cabin with the main dining table basically in the middle of the boat with fold down sides. The table is the right length to allow people to move in and out (in front of or behind the table) from the full length couch with book shelves and storage lockers behind the seat. The current owners have personal photos attached to the bulkhead wall, a Barometer, and Clock. Both port and starboard settees pull out to make double beds.

The head is full size on starboard between the main cabin and the forward cabin with 6' plus headroom. The sink has a pull out shower head and the head is manual.

The forward cabin has a full size double bed on starboard with lots of storage drawers, lockers, natural light artificial light, and on the port side is a sizable shelf and a full size hanging locker alongside a small hanging locker.

Moving aft on the port side, back into the main cabin is a locker for the television over the settee. Behind this couch are more book shelves and storage areas. Just aft of the couch is the base for the Nav station which has a small storage locker and shelf. The Nav Station faces forward with Furuno radar screen and Garmin GPS displays, circuit breaker panel, VHF radio, battery monitor, SSB, and EPRB. There's also an inverter under the navigator's seat. Behind the nav station is a large shelf with 2 storage lockers.

Under the companionway steps is excellent access to the engine.

All the ports open. The newer ceiling panels are bright and clean. Everywhere you look there is storage space, fans, lights (electric and kerosene), and everything a serious cruiser would want to have on a boat.
