About this Nantucket Clipper Yawl

"Lillie Langtry" was originally owned by Alan Buchanan, the vessel's Designer. She was built in 1972 as a three-quarter keel Bermudan rigged yawl and is a very capable yacht. She has been in the same ownership since 1982 and has been extensively cruised on the UK South Coast, Channel Islands, Brittany, Normandy and the Northern section of the French canal system. "Lillie Langtry" has been much loved but it is now time for her to be looked after by a new owner. This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a serious yacht at a very modest cost.

Owner’s Remarks

I have owned “Lillie Langtry” since 1982. I was looking specifically for a yacht with a higher ballast ratio, moderate draft and overall length, all essentials for safe single-handed sailing.

The original owner was her Designer, Alan Buchanan, and I was able to speak to him to get further background on the history of the vessel. Amongst other useful information, he told me that “Lillie Langtry” was built with a higher specification of joinery than other Nantucket Clippers.

For more than 35 years, I enjoyed very safe, comfortable and reliable sailing with “Lillie Langtry”. I regularly cruised the South Coast, France and Channel Islands as well as the Northern part of the French canal system. Most of this was sailed single-handed. However, single-handed sailing is no longer practical for me and, for that reason, “Lillie Langtry” needs a new owner.

I am often asked, why is she called “Lillie Langtry”? The original Lillie Langtry was a very beautiful woman and confidant of King Edward VII and is posted as a “most beautiful woman of elegance and style”. Lillie Langtry was also named “The Jersey Lily” having grown up in St Helier. Alan Buchanan, the yacht’s Designer, lived most of his life and ran his business in St Helier hence the naming of the yacht.
