About this Falmouth Cutter ALANO


'Alano' is a one-off Bermudan cutter designed by Robert Warrington Smyth and built by Falmouth Boat Construction Ltd. in 1959 for an American who wanted a purpose-built British yacht. She features in Eric Hiscock’s ‘Cruising Under Sail’. 

‘Alano’ undertook a 6-month refit in Cornwall, the UK in 2008 and was bought by the current owners in 2017 and has been well maintained since.

Interior and Accommodation

The interior is built using Afrimosia (African Teak), ply and cedar with a mahogany finish. The upholstery is green, fitted in 2007.

Alano offers four genuinely comfortable berths, utilising the main cabin's saloon seating, plus two quarter berths, the latter being abaft the chart table and galley.

  • The interior is built using Afrimosia (African Teak), ply and cedar with a mahogany finish. 
  • The upholstery is green, fitted in 2007. 
  • 1.9m headroom throughout.
  • 2 hatches and 4 x air vents.

The forecabin is dedicated to sail and equipment stowage, and is accessed through the heads compartment and located ahead of the main saloon.


The heads compartment itself extends across the boat. To starboard, are two hanging lockers and ladder access to the fore hatch.

The relatively long main saloon features parallel seating/berths either side of a central table. there is a feature cast and enamelled stove to port along with a bonded store that was built into the structure of the vessel for the original owners.

  • Gimballed oil lamps.
  • 12v lights have been tastefully modified and fitted with LED lamps.

A large chart table faces outboard to starboard aft of the settee berth. the modern ships electrical distribution panel is here with gauges for tanks.


The galley is to port with stainless steel work surfaces.

  • Cooker with oven, grill and two gas burner hob.
  • Ratley stainless steel sink with pressurised H&C water system.

The two aft quarter berths are nicely separated from the main saloon and can be separated from the saloon by a curtain giving privacy for two couples. The foredeck hatch and ladder to the forward heads allows deck access without disturbing those in the saloon.
The quarter berths extend forward of the cockpit so are not crammed under cockpit seats. They have high sides to sleep securely at sea. 


All this in an tasteful atmosphere of varnished hardwood trims and mellow coachroof sides, classic fifties chromed fittings and un-cramped space. A homely space to relax and appreciate the simple things in life.

Machinery and Propulsion

A Beta Marine four-cylinder, naturally aspirated diesel rated at approx. 38hp and fitted with a TMC60 reduction gearbox was fitted new in 2008 to replace the original Perkins engine of similar rating. The opportunity was taken to replace the engine beds using manganese bronze bolts at same time. A three-bladed, fixed propeller is driven by conventional stainless steel propeller shaft that turns within a conventional packing gland stern seal. The shaft turns on the vessel's centre line with the propeller turning within an aperture between stern post and rudder.

Electrical Systems

12 V DC systems are served by two batteries.Charging is by means of the engine-driven alternator only, with modern isolation and selection switches fitted.

A 24-way circuit breaker distribution panel with an ammeter and voltmeter and is mounted alongside the chart table along with an LCD battery management monitor fitted.

  • 2 x 12v batteries - 2018.
  • 12v LED lighting.
