About this Burnes Belmore sloop

Famous classic Royal Navy racing yacht for sale in boatyard workshop.

The Belmore sloop ELECTRON BLUE, designed by Illingworth & Primrose for the Nuffield Foundation, raced by HMS Collingwood, was built in mahogany on oak frames by Burne’s Shipyard Ltd. at Bosham in 1960 and is for sale as an uncompleted repair project inside a boatyard workshop in Lancashire, after the death of her owner.

Builder: Burnes’s Shipyard Ltd. Bosham GB,1960. Original registration: Lloyds 306423 Sail: 1168

Hull material: wood Category of Design: EC conformity:

Length: 36.25 feet [11.06m] Beam: 9.4 feet [2.84m] Draught: 6.0 feet [0.79m]

Displacement: 8000kg Engine: Yanmar 3GM three-cylinder diesel.

The vessel was undergoing a refit in the workshops of Douglas Marine, Becconsall Lane, Hesketh Bank, Preston, PR4 6RR.

The hull is carvel-built with mahogany planks, copper-fastened to steamed bent oak timbers and frames with sheathed marine and birch ply decks and varnished teak cabin coamings and cockpit. She has a raked stem with shallow forefoot, a transom stern and long deep keel. The ten-foot overhangs were conceived by John Illingworth to achieve a short waterline with a good RORC rating under the1960 racing rule.

The saloon features two settee berths, port and starboard and a pilot berth in the aft quarter. There are two berths in the focsle, with a galley to port, a chart table to starboard and a separate heads.

The yacht was built for the Nuffield Trust, launched on July 7, 1960 and named by Lord Nuffield the founder of the Morris Motor Company. The trust presented ELECTRON “for the forces of the Crown to the Portsmouth Command Sailing Association” and she was allocated by the Royal Navy to HMS Collingwood, the naval entry college at Fareham. She was raced by Royal Navy personnel for fifteen years. She raced regularly in the Solent and in the Fastnet, Around Britain, Sydney-Hobart and Bermuda Cup races. The reputation of her designers and her long racing history makes her a “classic yacht”. She was re-named Electron of Deal by her first private owners, Bernard Cadd, of Deal, and M.R. Davies of Tunbridge Wells.

As ELECTRON BLUE, during her third ownership between 2003 and 2013, she was fitted with a new centralised engine, gearbox, drive shaft and propeller, a new oak and iroko rudder, new electronics, new cockpit instruments, new standing and running rigging, new galley, Furlex headsail reefing, new self-tailing winches, new fuel and water tanks, new mahogany cabin trim, new CQR anchor, new automatic bilge pumps, gas detector and new chart table.

The marine ply and birch ply decks have been repaired by inserts and new oak frames have been fitted. The yard can complete the work where she lies and launch on the River Douglas.
