Top 7 Movie Boats

There are certain movies where the props and vehicles used in them become almost as iconic as the movie itself. Whilst there have been countless iconic cars in Hollywood movies, boats have arguably played just as big a role on the big screen. Below are 7 of the most famous movie boats of all time.

7. Stormvogel - Dead Calm

The 1989 Australian horror movie, Dead Calm, starred 3 main actors; Billy Zane (who also starred in another movie featuring a boat?), Sam Neil and a lady you may have heard of called Nicole Kidman.. there was also one more leading role in the film and she was played by "Stormvogel".

Stormvogel was a former racing yacht was later converted to a charter vessel and loaned to the producers of Dead Calm for filming. She is a racing ketch built by designer Van de Stadt in 1961. It seems she is still going strong today and back to performing well in her class in many classic Yacht Regattas.

6. Pemaquid Sloop – The Truman Show

The Pemaquid Sloop is a fairly understated entry when compared to the other boats on this list but then doesn't detract from how iconic its appearance on the big screen was. The yacht was made famous for its appearance at the end of The Truman Show, when Truman Burbank, played by Jim Carrey, finally discovers his fate.

It's a particularly memorable movie boat scene as Ed Harris, playing the director of the Truman Show, desperately tries to capsize the tiny boat in a bid to keep Truman in the falsely constructed world where he's filmed 24/7.

5. Seabourn Legend - Speed 2

Whilst the sequel to the 1994 original might have been panned by critics, it did have something going for it in the form of the iconic cruise liner that was featured in the film, the Seabourn Legend.

The vast majority of the film takes place on board the ship, which means even if the film itself didn't impress, the Seabourn Legend made a lasting impression on viewers.

3. The Orca - Jaws & Jaws 2

Jaws was not only a huge hit when it was first released in 1975 but it single-handedly started the concept of the summer blockbuster. The movie captured the public's imagination like nothing else at the time and a big part of what makes the movie so memorable is the boat that's used to hunt down the shark that's terrifying residents and tourists on the island on which the movie is set.

Known as the Orca , the boat was purchased for the movie by a location scout. It was then modified in several ways including adding bigger windows as well as being made to look more weathered at the request of the director, Steven Spielberg.

The Orca also makes a brief appearance in Jaws 2 as a wreck but it was its appearance in the original movie that made it so iconic.

2. James Bond - Sunseeker Yachts

At number 2, we unite two British Classics, James Bond and Sunseeker Yachts. Sunseeker have had a long-running collaboration with the James Bond franchise and the James Bond studios have never been shy of a bit of product placement!

1. RMS Titanic – Titanic

It might seem strange to refer to the RMS Titanic as a movie boat but the 1997 film staring a young Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet was such a monster hit that that's how many people view it. In order to make the reconstructed ship that was used in the movie as accurate as possible, the blueprints were provided by the original ship's builder.

The Titanic is easily the most famous vessel to appear in a movie. As of speaking the films has made more than $2 billion and was the highest grossing movie of all time, only being surpassed by Avatar in 2009. It also made huge stars of its lead actors.
