About this HoHsing FRP LTD, Tiawan NI38 Nantucket Island 38

Escape Winter aboard your Classic Center Cockpit Sloop sailboat. The NI38 is one of those rare boats that you run across that stands out from the rest. Sleek lines, center cockpit, flush deck, high freeboard, high build quality, excellent pedigree. A Nantucket Island packs a lot into under 40'. Easy to handle, a sea-kindly ride, this is a true blue water cruiser that will take you anywhere, safely, and comfortably. Small enough to easily handle single-handle, large enough to for entertaining.

Designed by Aussie Peter Cole of Americas Cup fame, the Nantucket Island was intended for the waters off the coasts of the Land Down Under. A place where the seas are serious, the coast line, rugged.. Built by Archie Chan of HoHsing Shipyards in Taiwan, world famous for their FRP products, the Nantucket Island was hand laid, port and starboard halves were laid up and joined together to form the hull. The keel is part of the hull, there are no keel bolts, and there is no way for the keel to fall off. As the keel void is filled with lead and sealed, even if the keel is holed, it will not flood the bilges, A comforting thought in the middle of an ocean. The flush decks make sailing handling in a blow, much safer. The flush decks also offer a great platform for entertaining in port.

Below decks you are greeted to hand rubbed oiled teak everywhere with Spruce Holly Soles. The layout seems to flow well with decent headroom, layout and feels larger than 38'. The engine room is located in the center of the vessel with great access. The Galley is to the Port side as you enter which is well laid out and well equipped. To the Starboard is the Nav. Station. Forward is the Salon and Settee' which can seat eight, or be converted into a double and single berth. The V-Berth area in the bow is large, with its own head and shower, hanging closest and plenty of storage. A pocket door which is lockable separates the V-berth area from the Salon.

Heading aft you will notice that there is plenty of ventilation and headroom. The rear head is large, it can be accessed from Nav Station or the Aft Cabin. A double berth is off to port and a long Settee' is to Starboard. 4 opening Port Lights and a large hatch above the berth, keep this area well ventilated. As large hanging closet and plenty of storage for gear.

The Nantucket Island Yacht is a Compact Bluewater Cruiser with an amazing layout which provides a very high level of functionality and comfort in under 40’. Available in two versions, the NI38 and NI33. The 5.5' draft is great in skinny waters, yet the heavy ballast ratio, keeps it stiff in a blow. The Modified Full Keel, provides good stability with a lower drag ratio, for faster passages. The PERF rating is decent for Regattas. The Sloop Rig is easy to handle and well balanced.

These classic yachts are not well known; because of they are rather scarce.

The NI38 is even rarer, as far as we know; only 5 were built, all in Taiwan. Ordered new in 1985 and delivered to Lake Michigan, this vessel spent the first 25 years in freshwater on Lake Michigan. Sailing seasons are short in Michigan; therefore most of the year was spent inside a storage facility.

Location and Accommodations-

SV PaPa is located in a quaint 8 slip marina, on a canal, across from a park with a Boardwalk that wraps the park. Sit on the bank of the St Lucie River and watch some magnificent sunsets at the famous Sunset Bay in Florida’s Treasure Coast. The sound of laughter and children playing fills the air here. The historic France Hotel and Casino provides the setting, this is a special place to unwind a little. The residents enjoy sitting at the patio next to the docks, talking to the sailors. Half the slips belong to locals who live nearby in this exclusive waterfront neighborhood, the other half are folks escaping the cold. In the past 100 or so years The France has seen its fair share of severe tropical storms and hurricanes, but still stands tall and proud, protecting the marina below. Located off the St Lucie River approximately 14 miles from the Atlantic Coast, where the Gulf Stream swings in close to the coast, creating Micro Climate Zones that tend to be warmer, than other areas of Florida, hence the name, “Treasure Coast”. From the St Lucie River you can head west to the Gulf of Mexico, through the locks, or east towards the Intercostal which will take you north or south. Just past the barrier Islands which protect the Intercostal is The Atlantic and The Bahamas are about 60 miles offshore. From this location, a short walk to downtown Historic Stuart Florida, it is a simple matter to get anywhere on the planet, via sea, or air. A private airport is nearby for those with their own plane.

When not in use, several nontoxic methods are utilized to prevent issues that typically occur in vessels stored in the Tropics. Great pains have been taken to keep the vessel as nontoxic as possible, by preventing issues before they manifest. A de-humidifier is left running 24/7 inside the boat to keep it dry. An air purification unit cleans and purifies the air, killing mold and mildew spores. An electronic pest repeller keeps the rest at bay.

SV PaPa is very well maintained and very well equipped for long term voyaging. Everything you need is already onboard, from silverware, dinnerware, cookware, grill, linens, bedding, safety equipment, cruising guides and charts, tools and spare parts, dingy, outboard, and foldable bike.
