About this Rival 36

The Rival 36 was the last of the Rival designs to be drawn by Peter Brett, the man responsible for creating the Rival brand and its iconic reputation as a robust reliable cruiser. Built by Southern Boatbuilding Company there were a total of 78 hulls produced in the class. Paramour is No 50.

'Paramour de Mer' was built for the Southampton Boat Show in 1988 at a time when the Company was trying to get into the N American market. She has the Lead Scheel Keel, and Mk2 Layout, Tall mast (+5’), Saloon bulkhead teak posts and much larger gas locker. She is offered for sale with a sizeable inventory highlights of which are:

HULL

Single piece, hand consolidated, heavyweight GRP moulding.

External bolt-on lead ballast Scheel keel.

Skeg hung rudder.

Moulded GRP sheer strake.

Moulded toerail with teak capping rail.

Preventative epoxy treatment applied below the waterline in 2003. A further two coats of epoxy applied in 2013 after antifouling removal.

Topsides finished externally in Awlgrip two-pack white paint in 2013.

DECK

Single piece, deck, cockpit and coachroof moulding.

Hand consolidated, heavy weight GRP moulding.

Non-slip Treadmaster panels epoxied to deck in 2013.

Moulding finished in original off-white gelcoat.

Lewmar Alloy framed portlights and deck hatches.

Teak grabrails running length of coachroof.

Teak slats on cockpit seat tops.

SPARS & RIGGING

Designed for offshore cruising the Rival 36 was drawn with a moderate sail plan. 'Paramour de Mer' benefits from having been with a US rig giving an additional 5’ of mast height, increasing sail area and improving light airs performance.

Deck stepped, masthead sloop rig.

All spars by Kemp/Selden, silver anodised alloy with cast end fittings.

New boom 2006 with uprated Selden Gooseneck.

Standing rigging of 1x19, 8mm stainless steel with chromed bronze rigging screws. Standing rigging and bottle screws replaced in 2015.

Selden roller reefing systems for Genoa.

Temporary forestay and highfield lever for attachment to either stemhead fitting or plate under bollard in foredeck.

Slab reefing mainsail, reefing lines at mast. 3 reefs.

Twin spinnaker poles for twin headsail – Tradewind rig.

Dedicated trysail track fixed to aft side of mast with Ronstan cars.

Mast steps fitted at masthead.

Additional Genoa tracks on deck to allow Blade Jib (full height, no overlap) and storm jib to be sheeted inside shrouds for better upwind performance in heavy weather.

BELOW DECKS

The main bulkhead with supporting posts, dominates the first impressions as you go below decks. The interior of the boat is constructed in a traditional fashion with joinery work of teak veneered plywood and solid teak trims finished in a satin varnish, maintained to a good standard. Upholstery is Alcantara “Fern Green” with a suede effect.

Description of below deck accommodation from forward:

Forepeak -Two single berths in the traditional V-berth formation with infill section to create double when required. Storage shelves overhead. Access to chain locker provided through opening hatch in forward bulkhead. Bin type locker storage provided under the bunks.

Heads -To port immediately aft of the forpeak, dedicated compartment with door. Compartment constructed from easy clean white formica finished with varnished teak trims. Beam facing Jabsco marine toilet, enamel sink. Opposite the heads a large hanging locker is provided aft, with vanity unit/draws to forward.

Saloon -Occupying the full beam of the boat the saloon spans the area between the main and saloon bulkheads. Centrally mounted teak drop leaf saloon table with bottle storage in central section. L-shaped bench settee with curved ends to port with straight bench settee to starboard. Port settee converts to double. Both settees protected with lee cloths. Above the starboard bunk a pull out pipe cot bunk pulls out when required. Generous storage provided throughout saloon area with lockers below and behind settees and lockers overhead.

Galley -Aft of the saloon bulkhead to port. U-shaped galley with work surfaces along aft ends, cooker mounted on gimbals outboard. Twin stainless steel sinks in work top adjacent to the saloon bulkhead with storage locker under worktop outboard. Coolbox under aft worktop outboard. Crockery and general storage lockers outboard with lockers beneath worktop. Baize lined cutlery drawer and 2 No additional drawers under chart table.

Nav Station -Opposite galley to starboard side of companionway. Large forward facing chart table with chart storage within the table. Dedicated forward facing navigators seat (batteries under). Bosuns drawers aside table. Ships switch panel outboard of seat with navigation instruments, radar display, GPS’s, Prosser electric barometer, AIS, mounted on bulkhead forward.

Quarter Storage area -Extending aft from nav station on starboard side. With shelves/storage cave lockers outboard and large engine access panel . Further storage under the gas locker.

GENERAL EQUIPMENT

Wind Vane – S/S Monitor wind vane pilot, mounted on transom two vanes and with tiller pilot attachment.

Wind Generator - Air Breeze on S/S post at stern with control panel at chart table.

Solar Panels - x2. Brand new, not currently fitted. Previous panels fitted above bimini.

Manual Bilge Pump - In cockpit.

Electric Bilge Pump - Manual and automatic activation.

ENGINE

The engine compartment is located within the box structure forming the bottom of the companionway steps. The box dismantles to provide excellent access around the engine. Further access to the exhaust system and sterngear can be gained through removable panels in the quarter storage area.
