History of MacGregor

Established in 1961 by the industrious boat designer Roger MacGregor, MacGregor Yacht Corporation has a longstanding history of creating reliable sailing vessels that combine portability, value, and performance in an excellent package. The company initially operated from Costa Mesa, California, where they first started designing and manufacturing the revolutionary fiberglass sailboats. MacGregor's ambition was fuelled by his vision to create affordable and family-friendly sailing boats, which turned out to be an incredible success with over 36,000 boats sold globally, earning the company a prime place in the sailing world.

During the 1960s and 1970s, MacGregor Yacht Corporation developed a series of trailerable sailboats including Venture, MacGregor 22, and MacGregor 25 which offered high performance while maintaining affordability. These designs revolutionised the marine industry, catering to yacht enthusiasts who wanted to enjoy the freedom of sailing without the burden of hefty investment. MacGregor's most groundbreaking model was the introduction of MacGregor 26 in the 1980s which was a blend of powerboat and sailboat. This design innovation offered versatility to sailors to enjoy both sailing modes without compromising speed, stability, and ease of handling.

After more than five decades of incredible contribution to the sailing world, MacGregor retired and shut down the manufacturing operations in 2013. However, the MacGregor spirit is carried forward by his daughter Laura MacGregor Sharp who started Tartan Yachts, now based in Painesville, Ohio. Under Tartan Yachts, the same ethos of affordable, versatile, and practical designs have been incorporated, providing a wide range of sailing solutions. Even though the boats are no longer being produced under the MacGregor name, the legacy of Roger MacGregor's innovative designs and his vision still reverberates in the modern sailing world.
