Salterns Boatbuilders - Traditional designs, modern materials
09 June 2008 - 13:38
Salterns Boatbuilders has lived in its idyllic Hamble River yard since 1996, one of the last traditional boatyards on the River. With a small team, we build a wide range of traditional boats originating from working environments, where good performance and ease of handling was essential to success. All of our boats have GRP hulls, with high quality, skilful wooden fit-outs, beautiful boats which perform extremely well.
The yard, down in the reeds, has an atmosphere all of its own. Greg Dalrymple “The Boss” has a deep understanding of boat design, and is passionate about capturing the knowledge evolved over the years in authentic traditional designs while taking full advantage of modern materials.
His interest in all things mechanical and traditional is (perhaps not surprisingly) reflected by a great number of our customers; fellow Morgan owners, ancient bicycle and classic motorbike enthusiasts and even cider makers discuss everything form sailing to scratter mills!
Past and present customers come for the ‘do’ at Christmas, to dispose of gallons of mulled wine and hundreds of mince pies in company of musicians, a warm stove and the two Labradors Smudge and Raf. That event seems to sum up Salterns, warmth, friendship and an appreciation of good, worthwhile artefacts.
THE MEMORY 19: The virtues of this authentic fishing smack are being discovered by today’s discerning leisure sailors; her stability and ease of handling make her an ideal family boat and her shallow draught is perfect for cascading a cargo of picnickers onto a beach. The Memory can be built as an ‘open’ boat, with two berths in the forepeak, or with a cabin, with two berths, galley etc.
Unique looks, gaff rigged, sparkling race winning performance, with an active Owners’ Association ~ a fulfilling experience!
THE TELA DAYBOAT 16’6”: Based on a pilot's seeking boat of 1911, Tela has a wonderful sailing performance drawn from her long racing pedigree. With 200kg of ballast and her heavy, deep centreplate, Tela is no dinghy but a small yacht; capable and fast, she will perform in light airs too. Beautiful lines, beautiful teak fit out with the added bonus that her 14” draught (plate up) makes her a perfect explorer of rivers, creeks and little bays….. and she can be easily towed behind the average family car.
THE WAGTAIL SAILING DINGHY 12’6”: Wagtail has more freeboard than any other boat in her class making her dry to sail even in her choppy home waters of the Solent, and her unique large centreplate makes her very stable. Beautifully balanced in all conditions she is an ideal training boat and is designed to be as easy as possible to rig, launch and sail. The more experienced sailor will appreciate the large sail area and surprising turn of speed. Her substantial GRP hull is fitted out in a traditional manner in solid teak with beautiful polished bronze fittings as standard.
