Inland Sailing and Ocean Going All In One
05 June 2008 - 12:59
Designed by the renowned Dutch yacht designer Willem de Vries Lentsch and built by Ocean Safe Yachts, “Sagesse” really is a uniquely versatile yacht.
Mass production boats are generally designed from the “outside-in”, trying to cram everything into a set length. However, the design of Sagesse came from a different angle; deciding the interior function and then building a yacht around it. This is the only way to have a functional interior without compromise.
Captain André R. Lardy and his wife Joan had Sagesse, their fifth boat, built to a high specification due to his respect for the power of the sea:
"You see, with the sea experience I learned that as you cannot demand anything of the sea, you had better be able to demand the maximum of your boat. I like to say that experience made me have the good sense of being "the chicken of the sea".
The result is a 53' (16m) sailing yacht built from extra strong Corten Steel with a double bottomed hull up to 1' above the waterline. Corten Steel is a U.S. Steel patent containing chrome, nickel and molybdenum making it atmospherically rustproof! This high grade steel is nearly twice as strong as the ordinary Siemens Martin Steel.
Ocean Going and Inland Cruising
Captain Lardy also wanted a yacht that wasn’t limited to sailing from one port’s mooring ring to another. He wished, not only to cross the oceans, but also to be able to access the magnificent inland waterways as well and, as such, had Sagesse designed so that these glorious, magnificently picturesque places were accessible to her.
Sagesse is the world’s largest sailing yacht to have ever sailed from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, across France, via the Canal du Midi, and from The Med to the North Sea and back across France, Belgium, Holland and into Germany!
Sagesse is for sale
Unfortunately, due to ill health, Captain Lardy must part company with this extraordinarily versatile yacht and it is now for sale. View the details here.
