AYC beginnings were in 1883 as an informal canoe club. A building was constructed two years later on a pile of oyster shells at the foot of Duke of Gloucester Street, which, in 1886, became the club house for the formally organized Severn Boat Club. This oyster pile was rented from St. Marys Church and was next to a rickety wooden bridge across Spa Creek. In 1897 a new clubhouse was built and was enlarged in 1912
In 1933, the founders of Narrasketuck Yacht Club stated that the primary purpose of the club was the following: " To encourage its members in becoming proficient in the personal management, control and handling of their yacht, and promote socialbility and recreation among its members."
