exciting dinghy development

Hi im a design sudent undertaking a marine project for my major. Does anybody know of any marine technologies which originated in dinghies and developed into larger craft? I am at the justification phase of my project and hope to develop a current dinghy technology, into the powerboat market. Its a matter of trend projection and i want to know if its feesable to suggest that a certain current dinghy trait might progress into the powerboat market. cheers
