M Class Cutter named Formidable

Hello
You built a beautiful M Class Cutter commissioned by the New York Yacht Club in 1929. She was named Formidable in the UK and I chartered her for a few years in the late 80s. I am trying to locate her. She was 82ft. Have you ever heard what happened to her?

She was based in Ocean Village, Southampton and had a navy blue hull.
Thank you so much
Angela

Hello Angela,

I found your search for Formidable using a Google search for M CLass Cutters.

I have a beautiful picture of an M Class Cutter and have always been intrigued by the photo and the class (being some what familiar with the Js and other Universal Rule boats, as well as International Rule boats).

When did you charter Formidable, and where was she based?

They are such magnificent boats.

Do you know of any other M boats afloat?

Thanks for your reply.

Kind Regards,
Jamie Leopold

I think you will find the boat, now renamed to it's original "Simba", in Holland. Suggest you check this web site: http://www.classicmasterpieces.nl/. BTW I spent a summer on the boat, when I was very young, when it was named "Barlovento". More on www.universalrule.com. The Gentleman who replied earlier also contacted me through universalrule.com, and sent me this link. I hope this info is helpful.

I was lucky enough to crew 'Formidable" back from Antigua to Plymouth, U.K. in 1990 as part of a delivery job, undertaken by Simanda yachts of Dartmouth.
I've been trying to get in touch with the skipper (Laurie Smith? and one of the crew Peter Hambly, as a video was taken, and it would be great to see it after all this time). It was a great experience for a relative novice like me, and I felt safe in her, despite what the Atlantic threw at us.
Does anyone know of their whereabouts?
Many thanks James Godden

last time i saw formidable 1992 she was on a swinging mooring for sale in dartmouth harbour.not looking her best the iron frames that she was built on were leaving rust streaks down her wooden hull.
not a good sight, texan coleman schwartz who owned her in 60's-70's would turn in his grave.
he spent a fortune on her before he lost most of his money in the oil business of the 70's.
please keep informed.
