Gusts make boat turn upwind

Thanks for all your answers on sailing in light winds - now I've got the opposite question:

When I'm sailing in stronger winds, on a close haul, stronger gusts of wind make the boat turn more into the wind. I steer the boat away from the wind to compensate but it doesn't seem to make any difference until the gust subsides (even if I have the helm hard-over).

What am I doing wrong?

You must have too much main sail set or insufficient foresail. A balance between the two has to achieved. Too much main ihncreases the drive behind the mast and has a turning effect into wind. This increases the need for excess helm to be applied which, in turn, decreases the hull speed and before you know it, you've stalled. (Imagine the rudder being applied to its full extent when it presents opposition to the flow of water).

Keeping the boat flatter will solve the problem. This may be easier said than done, but if you get the main sail as flat as possible, using the outhaul, cunningham and kicker, you will reduce the power in the sail. If you are still overpowered, free the main sheet to spill some wind, the boat will come upright and you will be able to bear away.
