Maintaining steerage way on the back of a wave when crossing a bar ?

A lot of experts say, if your boat has the speed, it's safe to ride through on the back of a wave about one third back from the crest. I haven't tried it yet, but would like to hear from anyone who uses this method to ride the waves!
What I would like to know is - if i'm going to be travelling at the same speed as the wave ,would I not lose control of the outboard steerage way, resulting perhaps in a dangerous fall of at the bow of the boat to port or starboard and with every possibility of broaching into the face of the following wave ?
Thanks in advance, Morry

Hi,

As long as you stay on the back of the wave and avoid any foaming where the wave may break you shoul be OK. If you prop enters the foam it is likely that it will loose traction in the water resulting in a loss of power.

This is something that needs practice! Start small and then you will feel much more confident on larger waves. It also depends on the type of boat you have etc. If you have any other questions feel free to drop me an email.

Cheers,

Mark
