My wife and I are ready to buy a boat but I need help finding the right boat for our needs. First, we are on a limited budget, so we'll buy used. Second, we have 4 boys, mostly young right now so we need a boat that can accommodate at least 6 people comfortably and preferably a couple more so that we can have friends and family on the boat with us. Primarily we'll be tubing/skiing and just cruising around the lakes, anchoring out to swim and sunbath or to hang out with other boaters.

So what make/models should we be looking at? Will an 18' be long enough? How much HP do I need from the engine to be satisfied.

I would certainly appreciate comments and suggestions from all of you seasoned boaters.

Just got back from a week at the Lake of the Ozarks where we rented a 21' Sea Ray, open bow. It had a 5.7L engine and a Bravo 2 outdrive, I think. It was perfect for skiing and tubing carrying anywhere from 4 to 8 good sized people. Right now is a great time to buy a power boat, BTW - buyers market, for sure. People are shell shocked with the gas prices (just like they were in the '70's) and powerboats are selling for a song. I'm looking for a single engine diesel trawler so I don't kill myself with fuel costs.

I run an 18ft Maxum bowrider with a Yamaha 115 on the back. It will take 8 at a pinch but 6 in comform. The kids love being up the front in the open and the adults get the comfy seats in the back. The boat is easy to trail, fun on the water and goes like the proverbial. 35 - 40 mph no problem. Great for skiing / toys but happy to potter and explore as well.

I would suggest you do what Bilgescum did in the Ozarks. Rent a boat. Maybe try a few different sizes, see what works and doesn't work for you. In the meantime you can keep your eyes peeled on any good deals that arise.

The 18' to 21' range would probably suit what you need. As Bilgescum says there's some good deals out there, specially in the US where that size of boat is a huge market.

Also, be sure to factor in fuel, maintenance and insurance costs when you're looking at your budget. Oh, and don't forget accessories and food! Buying the boat is the cheap part.
