Looking to buy 25'-31' cabin cruiser for liesure cruising U.S. east coast. Are newer diesel engine reliable and economical compared to gasoline?

Yes, very much so. They are reliable and economical to run but their initial costs can be very high if you're comparing them to an older gas engine.
