I have 4 batteries aboard a aluminum boat. 2 x 12v batteries for the trolling motor which is connected in series. I have 1x 12v accessory battery and 1x12v starter battery. Should I connect each batteries negative termiinval to the negative terminal of the starter battery i.e make the starter battery the common ground ? Note that the engine is not using a negavitve bus , it is connected directly to the starter battery. Right now all of the devices negative connections are basically terminating at the said battery.

Ideally the engine should be the common ground. However if you connect the negatives to the starter battery negative it should be ok, because for the starter to work it has to be connected to both positive and negative.
