engine cuts out after 1-2 minutes

I have an old 4HP Johnson 2 stroke outboard. Recently it's started cutting out after a couple of minutes (it gradually dies - more like a fuel problem than electric). After a short while it can be started but then after a minute or so it dies again. The fuel is OK and of course I have opened the fuel valve and made sure the cap on the tank is loose (so there is not a vaccuum in the tank). Any ideas on what I need to check?
