Selling house to live aboard...advice

Wife and I are 'empty nesters' and are ready to 'downsize' ... we are considering selling our house and buying a motor yacht (probably about 60') to live aboard. We wouldn't cruise much, instead find a berth and live on it. We would do some short weekend cruises at most. We have a sailboat and enjoy the marina atmosphere.

If anyone has any experience like this I would love to hear it.

I have for the past three years been living on my 33 ft motor cruiser. When I finish work and return onboard my boat, I immediately feel the wholes days stresses and strains fall off me. At the week ends or holidays and days off, I sail off to a nice peaceful bay and drop my anchour. no people radios tv or any other people pollution anywhere around me.

The only sounds are the wind and tide and sometimes, people walking along the hilltops or the shoreline in the distance. Its A WONDERFUL WORLD TO BE PART OF.

If the weather is starting to change or another boater is too close, I can pick up my anchour and find another bay or just simply quietly sail along back to my marina.

When I am lying in bed, I love to hear my ropes making the noises as the boat moves in the wind and tide.

Every year she comes out for a few weeks, whilst I clean her bottom, change her anodes and repaint the hull and give her a good inspection.

The old girl is still looking great and I am very proud of her, she gives me lots of pleasure and all my friends adore her. I wouldnt go back to living ashore again, the noise, people pollution, noisey nieghbours, the ant trail every day, and oh dont forget the flippen lawn mowers every day in the summer. Theres nothing like only hearing the water gently slapping against the hull whilst your rreading your book.

The bad side, winter I sometimes get wet when leaving to go to and return from work or the shops and at times the wind can be quite servere. Something my girlfriend dislikes very much so when she is going to work...

For most of the year I look out of my window each day or night and see a very pleasant environment, its also great to the various wild life around the marina something you dont see in a house or apartment.

But being really honest a lot of people have given good advice on here, give it a go even for a week end or a few weeks and make your own judgement for yourselves.

A very happy sailor
