Hello, I have always wanted to get into sailing or boating. Now, when I have the opportunity, I really do not know where to start? Where to get information on boats, do I need to have a licence to be able to sail, do I need to have documentation on the boat ( like legal ownership and insurance), etc. Can somebody help me out here please?

Hi Lesley,

You don't need a licence to sail - unless you're doing it commercially. But it's a good idea to go on some courses so you know what you're doing.

The RYA is a good place to start. They can advise on sailing courses in your area. Their web site is: http://www.rya.org.uk

As for registration, you're not required to register the boat unless you want to take it abroad.

Insurance is always a good idea and may be compulsory depending on the type of craft. A couple of insurers that can provide you with more information: [removed]

When you come to buy your boat, read our guide to Buying A Boat Safely - to help you avoid the common pitfalls: http://www.theyachtmarket.com/guides/buying_a_boat.aspx

I hope that helps.

A query about delivering boats...

Hi,
my name's Elissa and I just recently joined this website. I've always been interested in sailing, having grown up with it in my life since a young age and my father is an old sea-hand. I'm interested in learning about what it takes to be a part of a crew delivering boats.

I met a few people in Cape Town years ago that delivered boats and it made interested ever since, though this is the first time I thought to investigate it. I would like some information as to the kind of skills and background an individual is expected to have, what relevant training or sailing experience and if possible, are all crew members expected to have sailing trainging and experience? I ask this last question because I met a crew of three who were delivering a small yacht from Cape Town to the Carribean and whilst two were sailing-trained, the other was a cook.
Any info anyone has would be great :)

Thanks heaps

Elissa
